1. a) If
funds were available, what youth activities related to a
CoP would you like to do as an individual?
b)
What non-financial support do you need to do these
activities?
c) If funds were available, what youth activities
related to a CoP would your organization like to
do?
PeaceJam, as an international peace education program is
most interested in education for a culture of peace. We have
worked for the past 10 years with 14 leading Nobel Peace Laureates
to create a K-12 educational program that fosters within youth a
personal commitment to peaceful approaches to local and global
problems as well as school and community wide commitment to a
culture of peace.
Specifically, we would like to work with
local and regional education systems to implement the PeaceJam K-12
curriculum which includes the components mentioned in the ADVICE TO
THE SECRETARY-GENERAL AND THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY document.
PeaceJam's impacts on youth include civic engagement, ethic of
service, conflict resolution, personal choices, identity, commitment
to human rights and social justice and skills and passion to take
action by planning and implementing service-learning projects at the
local and global levels.
d) What non-financial support does
your organization need for CoP activities?
Under the
direction of the 14 Nobel Peace Laureates that are members of the
PeaceJam Foundation, we have created a K-12 peace education program
that would like to see in every school/community in the world.
Thus, we could use access to educational systems (local and
national), teacher preparation programs, and teacher professional
development systems in countries around the world. We also
will need access to the community and faith-based organizations that
provide programming (or could provide) to their local
youth.
2. a) What changes in youth policies do you think the
government/ leadership in your country should make to promote
a CoP?
Promoting International Day of Peace and Living a
Culture of Peace Week would be a good start. But their efforts
need to be integrated into a comprehensive effort to
institutionalize service-learning (and related skills of research,
community needs assessment, goal setting, etc.) and peace education
(content related to current events, historical perspectives on
non-violent solutions to problems - with the understanding that the
textbooks' portrayal of history as a series of armed conflicts is
inaccurate).
b) What CoP youth activities/initiatives do you
think the UN should do?
The activities need to focus "youth
as leaders of today." The UN needs to create a youth committee
that would take leadership in creating and overseeing this
initiative including the funding of grants to groups of youth who
are working in concrete ways to address the UN Millennium Goals of
ending poverty, etc. - which need to connect to the UN Culture of
Peace initiative.
In Sept. 2006, PeaceJam, in honor of its
10th Anniversary is hosting the largest gathering of Nobel Peace
Laureates in the world (outside of Oslo Norway) to spend a weekend
with 3,000 youth from around the world. They work side by side
with the youth to grapple with the issues confronting youth and all
people on the planet. At this event the Dalai Lama, Desmond
Tutu, Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Wangari Maathai and several other
leading Peace Laureates will issue a"Global Call to Action" to the
youth of the world. This call to action will be similar in
many ways to the UN Millennium goals - with a specific focus on what
youth can work on.
This event will be Sept. 15-17 is the
weekend prior to and thus kicks off "Living a Culture of Peace
Week."
We invite you to spread the word about this event to
the organizations that you work with and extend an invitation for
their youth to join us for this once in a life time event that is
geared to shape the world for the next 10 years. You can visit
our website at www.peacejam.org for more
information.
OPTIONAL QUESTIONS
3. Do you have any
suggestions or recommendations for improving youth participation in
CoP activities on any levels (UN, government, civil
society)?
Yes, educate the youth on the real, complex issues
facing their communities and then give them the skills and support
to create innovative solutions to those problems through informed
service-learning projects that connect their academic studies to the
issues in their communities.
4. What could be done to
improve/ensure transparency and flow of information in promoting the
CoP?
The youth will have good ideas about to address this
issue using technology.
5. To ensure the best possible
benefit of a UN Voluntary Fund for youth and CoP, how should it be
managed/administered?
By a select group of youth.
6.
How can youth not yet involved in CoP activities be reached and
motivated?
We have an international network of PeaceJam Youth
in 9 countries - maybe there is a way to collaborate.

permission to quote you?
Dear David
Yes, it is okay to
quote from the response I sent you. Can you send me the draft
before it is published so I can review the quotes in context.
If not, I understand.
On another note, we still would
like for your organization to bring or sponsor some youth that you
work with to attend our 10th anniversary Celebration in
Sept.
