1. a)
If funds were available, what youth activities related to a CoP
would you like to do as an individual?
I would use such
funds to travel to the Global South - starting with Southern Africa
- to collect stories of achievement to post at
www.backofthemoon.org. I would acquire audio and video clips
of ingenuity and success in these regions and make them available
to Northern audiences to offset the images currently plaguing the
media.
b) What non-financial support do you need to do these
activities?
Donations of goods such as airline tickets or
equipment would be much appreciated. But also, publicity or
networking opportunities would be great to promote the organization
and key messages, as well as recruit volunteers.
c) If
funds were available, what youth activities related to a CoP would
your organization like to do?
We'd like to modify the
website, perhaps using the expertise of paid consultants. We'd
also like to create more promotional materials and
signage.
d) What non-financial support does your
organization need for CoP activities?
Same as individual
needs.
2. a) What changes in youth policies do you think the
government/leadership in your country should make to promote a
CoP?
I think that much of the inequality in the world can be
traced back to unfair and unhealthy trade policies that are
promoted by our government here in Canada. I believe that our
government should make policy to support fair trade, less
packaging for consumer goods, and remove all carcinogens from
cleaning agents and other products. Corporate Canada should be
made environmentally and internationally responsible by our
government.
b) What CoP youth activities/initiatives do you
think the UN should do?
A youth body should be formed and
should quickly take action toward one of the CoP objectives.
The world should recognize immediately that this body has
power, moves to action, and is NOT going to be another cog in the
UN machine.
OPTIONAL QUESTIONS
3. Do you have any
suggestions or recommendations for improving youth participation
in CoP activities on any levels (UN, government, civil
society)?
I have to praise the Canadian governments Youth
Internship Programme which sends hundreds of young people abroad
every year. I don't believe that any other country in the
world has such a programme and it is highly beneficial. I
recommend that other countries and the UN create more
opportunities in this respect.
4. What could be done to
improve/ensure transparency and flow of information in promoting
the CoP?
A well-maintained website with all minutes, news and
relevant updates is a great and easy way to keep all information
at the fingertips of youth everywhere. Meetings are also key
in establishing relationships between individuals that help
maintain transparency by eliminating anonymity.
5. To ensure
the best possible benefit of a UN Voluntary Fund for youth and
CoP, how should it be managed/administered?
Through a
governing body of youth who should be elected by
youth.
6. How can youth not yet involved in CoP
activities be reached and motivated?
They can be reached
through organizations like the ones you've contacted. With
more funding and networking these organizations can expand their
reach.
7. a) Which other organizations do you know of,
that work for a CoP?
I believe that cooperation is essential
in establishing a CoP. Thus, I think that Taking It
Global is doing a great job. Also, Engineers Without
Borders, the Stephen Lewis Foundation, and Planned Parenthood are
all strong organizations with clear objectives that affect positive
change.
b) Would you be willing to contact them or may we
contact them with the questionnaire? Please specify.
Feel
free to contact them if you haven't already.
