Good
News Agency
QUESTIONNAIRE
Firstly) Is your
organization youth-led or primarily youth-serving? Please explain
briefly.
It is primarily youth-serving. Our cultural
activities, mainly seminars, are addressed to the youth. Our
information activities, mainly the Good News Agency, is addressed by
the Internet to the general public through the media in 48
countries, as well as to NGOs. Our specific programme "Let us bring
Good News Agency to the schools" has been supported by the Italian
Rotary clubs since 2003 and now it is spreading also in other
countries; the target of this programme are the youth (high schools
and above).
1. INDIVIDUAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL
ACTIVITIES
a) If funds were available, what youth activities
related to a culture of peace (CoP) would you like to do as an
individual?
b) What non-financial support would you need to
do these activities?
c) If funds were available, what youth
activities related to a CoP would your organization like to do?
1. In addition to the present editions in English and
Italian, we would like to issue the Good News Agency also in German,
French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic and Portuguese, so as to
cover more meaningfully the main donor countries as well as the
major beneficiary areas in the world.
2. We would like to
introduce our Good News Agency to the basic structures of the
education systems in the main western countries, with the aim of
getting their introduction of our positive news programme to the
teachers and professors of each western country -- the ultimate
objective being to prepare the new generation to understand and
support their nation's contribution to the Official Development
Assistance and to solidarity and sharing at large.
d) What
non-financial support would your organization need to do these
activities?
1.We would need a group of voluntary, qualified
and reliable translators for each language issue. 2. We would
need a voluntary, reliable P.R.professional in each of the
major western countries.
2. SUPPORT FROM GOVERNMENT AND
THE UN
a) What changes in youth policies do you think the
government/leadership in your country should make to promote a CoP?
It should include in the school curricula the subjects that
best define this period of transition towards a culture of peace,
i.e. international legislation and human rights, together with study
programmes based on the understanding of the Millennium Development
Goals and on the knowledge of the obstacles and progress towards
their achievement.
b) What CoP youth activities do you think
the UN should carry out?
Making leverage on the youth-led
organizations, the UN should be a catalyst for regular national and
regional events that offer the youngsters a meeting point for
discussion on the Millennium Development Goals.
Also, the UN
should allocate a fraction of the ODA to programs for the
preparation of a more balanced public opinion at large, and
specifically for a more informed youth. The work for this goal could
well include specific work on part of the UN as well as on part of
civil society. The Good News Agency is a good example of the latter,
we think.
Also, joint programmes could produce appreciable
results in those fields where a large part of the western youth is
easily reachable, such as the Internet and the related pc programs.
For instance, a game like Monopoly but based on the interrelation of
the MDG, could become popular with the youth of the western
countries, with a positive medium-term effect on those countries'
attitude toward the ODA.
OTHER QUESTIONS
3. Do you
have any suggestions or recommendations for improving youth
participation in CoP activities on any level (UN, government, civil
society)? See our answers to question 2a and 2b.
4. What
could be done to improve/ensure transparency and flow of information
in promoting the CoP?
One thing could be the preparation of
an annual rating per country and per DDG, and its spreading to the
schools and the media.
5. To ensure the best possible
benefit of a UN Voluntary Fund for youth on the CoP, how should it
be managed/administered?
It should be managed/controlled by
the UN, based on specific inputs for each program managed by the
organization responsible for running it on the field.
6. How
can youth not yet involved in CoP activities be reached and
motivated to get involved?
See our answers to question 2a and
2b.
