1.
a) If funds were available, what youth
activities related to a CoP would your organization like to
do?
Speaking as the President of the Copen Family Fund, I
would suggest further support for iEARN for teacher training for the
use of project-based learning globally. But with a philosophy
of taking action for people and the planet. Why? So that
we truly develop a "culture of peace" by having our youth know how
to work globally for peace *before* they graduate high
school
b) What non-financial support does your organization
need to do these activities?
Connections to other funders.
Connections to decision makers in public education globally --
perhaps bringing key people together to work together to step up to
this challenge for the 21st C.
2. a)
What changes in youth policies do you think the
government/leadership in your country should make to promote a
CoP?
Encourage the states to implement a graduation
requirement from K-12 education that all students will have engaged
in a global/local service-oriented project. And that these
projects educated the students about the challenges to Peace
(understanding, poverty, disease, violence, environmental
destruction, etc)
b) What CoP youth activities/initiatives do
you think the UN should do?
They should create a Youth
Representative to the U.N. And that representative should help
to build a global network on line that accessess the voices of
billions (!) of youth to offer their voice on specific U.N. issues.
However, just offering a voice is not enough. The youth
in this network need to be educated about the problems as well so
they can make informed decisions.. So some kind of "criteria
for knowledge" and "critical thinking" should be
required.
OPTIONAL QUESTIONS 3. Do
you have any suggestions or recommendations for improving youth
participation in CoP activities on any levels (UN, government, civil
society)?
Consciously train leaders for the 21st C.
Make it a requirement for teachers education at the University
level to identify what those leadership qualities are and teach to
them. Make sure to include the exponential power of ICT for
creating the reality of each others humanity and the experience of
working together for a better world.
4.
What could be done to improve/ensure transparency and flow of
information in promoting the CoP?
? 5.
To ensure the best possible benefit of a UN Voluntary Fund for
youth and CoP, how should it be managed/administered?
By a
Board of Directors that has proven experience working with youth
organizations as well as Education. They would then hire the
Director who would hire the program officers. And who have
proven themselves to have the heart, mind and soul for this work.
Also large contributions from the Board can't hurt!
;-)
A yearly assessment of performance should be part
of the operating procedures as well as a simple and succinct mission
statement. 6. How can youth not yet involved
in CoP activities be reached and motivated? By using
the media: Internet, T.V., radio, word of mouth. Also
approaching leadership organizations.
