(can be quoted - see below)

1. c) CYP meeting in Malta in November resulted in a decision to prioritise working with youth on tolerance, understanding and respect issues. In May, the Ministers of Youth from the Commonwealth countries + a youth representative from each country, met and decided to work on governance, conflict and poverty as key issues. Funds would be used for projects and continued youth participation in these areas.

2. a) Target policy on two levels - look at youth policy (often unused document on a shelf), but also at how we can "mainstream youth issues across the board" (ok to quote) similar to how other issues are mainstreamed into policy, e.g. gender. Look at agricultural policy, economic policy, cultural policy and see how we can make youth issues part of them, not only a separate youth policy.

The CYP is also looking at developing a "Youth Development Index" to monitor progress and see if youth policies and initiatives are really becoming more participatory and if the situation for young people around the world is improving.

3. There are many ways of involving youth and other generations in the same process. Mr Simmons is an expert at community outreach methods, such as using cultural events at community level to discuss issues relevant for the whole community that require intergenerational dialogue. He gave many examples from India, Pakistan, Senegal and the Caribbean where animation methods, popular theatre and music is used for dialogue between local decision makers and communities.

The CYP also has a diploma course called "Youth in Development Work". After having completed a set number of modules, students can obtain a diploma that makes them eligible to start university. This gives a second chance to people who don't have enough formal education background to attend university.
