1 c) (Preferred to speak only for the organisation) Intercultural
activities with youth. Emphasis on activities that aim to promote
empathy and understanding particularly relating to muslim identity in
view of the current international climate. Activities both locally and
internationally, bringing in perspectives from both arenas.
1 d)
Access to a network of organisations with expertise on particular
topics, such as community based organisations focusing on muslim
identity both in UK and e.g. Middle East. Also in need of ways to share
information effectively around common topics with other organisations.
BYC could provide training for trainers if needed.
2 a)
Government should take measures to engage youth and encourage active
citizenship. To prevent alienation, youth should be made equal partners
in processes that concern them. Lack of understanding and dialogue
between the adult world/structures and young people need to be
addressed in terms of communication, institutions etc. Government
officials should be trained in youth dialogue and young people should
be part of carrying out that training.
2 b) UN seen as a macro
player with little insight into grassroots level. BYC thinks UN should
work to make international platforms more accessible for youth from all
backgrounds. The UN should support work towards more participative
processes, taking into account regional differences. Maybe target
efforts at regional and local needs instead of having one standard
international format/process for a particular initiative.
Optional questions
3.
Formal structures are insufficient to involve youth. They need to reach
out to young people and communicate on their terms, through e.g.
adapting information matieral, marketing, dialogue and meetings to make
it less formal. Young people often have the strongest opinions, but no
fora to express them. They make their own - see e.g. rap music.
5.
A UN voluntary fund would need to be managed by a number of key
partners who develop the working methods together - make it inclusive
and make sure grassroots level is involved. Draw on regional
differences in terms of format of processes as a resource to facilitate
projects.
