ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONNAIRE
INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITIES
1. Activities to be made if funds were available A- Attending to a participatory video course run by Insight organization, UK
B- Taking part in a Video Volunteer Project, travelling to a developing country to teach the use of video and his potential
C- Producing documentaries.
At the moment the most relevant projects I am committed to are: 1.
MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S WAR: a reportage in the form of a tourist's diary in
the aftermath of the bombing in Lebanon, to be shot in between October
and November 2006. The funding needed at the moment for the shooting
part of the production are estimated around 7000 euros 2. EU
ASYLUM POLICIES: a series of short documentaries showing how different
is life for political refugees according to different country of the EU
they are living in 3. MALTA HAVEN: a documentary showing the impact of migration on the island since Malta joined EU in 2004 4. BEYOND IOM: a film showing the lives of refugees who are relocated in a third country after they have been granted protection 5. THE UKRAINIAN VAN: a documentary showing the life of Ukrainian women who moved to Italy to take care of elder people 6.
REMITTANCES: a series of short documentaries showing the effect of
remittances of workers abroad to the economies of their counties of
origin
2. Non financial support for the activities above
A- None, it is just a matter of covering the fee
B-
It may be interesting to know if there are similar projects which do
not require a fundraising campaign in order to cover the expenses C-1 For
project at point 1, the Lebanon one, the most useful support could be
for local transports and accommodations, maybe via a network of
organizations, and an assistance for the preparation of all the papers
that will allow free circulation in the country and some advised about
what kind of insurance for health and equipment is necessary at this
point of the hostilities.
C-2.3.4. For the projects at points
2/3/4 about EU refugees policies, Malta migration situation and IOM
activities it would be very useful to have access to reports and
databases which deal with the issues and more specifically it would be
essential to meet people who have been working on this issues at
different levels. Of course any kind of networking from organizations
in Malta, IOM executives or EU members of staff to migrants themselves
would be very appreciated. Another basilar action would be the
opportunity to distribute the films to the widest possible audience,
not much through usual broadcasters but more carefully using NGO who
work closely to migrants themselves, and organization who are based in
the country of origin of the people portrayed in the films
C-5 Project
at point 5, Ukrainian Van, will need assistance for all the part that
will be filmed outside Italy, especially the journey of the van from
and to Ukraine in the form of legal permissions and local support from
Ukraine residents. Any information about the migration of people from
the country and the relevance of their remittances would also be very
important.
C-6 The project Remittances is at a very early stage so it still needs all kind of documentation available to be more focused
ORGANIZATION ACTIVITIES
1. Activities to be made if funds were available
A-
Expand the program of Egagè Documentary-Festival del Documentario
Civile. After this year first edition we are aiming to have more films
and guest for 2007.
B- Through the structure of Engagè
Documentary start to produce short documentaries, by directors that are
not part of Lilithwwork, dealing with themes of the civil society that
are generally not considered by the main broadcasters. The idea of this
series is to focus on little stories, very local ones, that may not
sound so relevant for an international audience but happen to be vital
for the conservation of the specific social and natural environment.
C-
Creating an Italian network for the introduction of participatory video
and photography in schools. The educational effort will be directed to
primary and secondary school children, in order to make them aware of
the language and the communication strategies of this media.
D-
Starting to use participatory video and photography with migrants. In
order to open their lives to local communities in a project of
integration but also to try to set up a dialogue with the countries of
origin.
E- Producing a documentary which we are developing about a multicultural theatre in Amsterdam called Made in Da Shade
2. Non financial support for the activities above
A-
Lots of the expenses to run the festival could also be covered through
institutional patronage and services supplying so any kind of support
in order to expand this opportunities would be very important. The
visibility of the Festival would make possible investors more
interested so the link to a worldwide network dealing with similar
issues would very appreciated. Another way to improve the quality of
the offer would be a continuous exchange of films and opinions with
other festivals and filmmakers/producers.
B- The production of
short local documentaries will be based on economical support mainly
anyway the dialogue with organizations and individual interested in the
project will be essential
C-D All the participatory
video/photography projects will need a training experience for the
teaching staff and sometimes the opportunity to travel abroad to
experience different working methods. The availability of equipment and
spaces for the courses will be essential.
E- At this stage of
the production the most important non financial help could be a legal
support for the funding application to the EU MEDIA project.
GOVERNMENT POLICIES CHANGES
My
main concern, as emerges from the kind of activities listed above, is
intercultural dialogue at all the levels of nowadays western
societies. Italy, my country is still far behind most of other European
countries in having multicultural society, this is due mainly to
historical reasons. On the other hand today due to its geographical
position and political role, as a EU member, it has to face a strong
immigration pressure. Italian society is not prepared to understand
what is happening and the security alarms will not help to stop or
control the phenomenon on a long term period. It is very important that
Italian people are informed of what is going on day by day but more
important and effective will be a large scale campaign of information
about the people that will be the future Italian citizens. It is vital
that we will all know where these people are coming from, what are the
reasons that force them to migrate, economical, historical or
environmental, what is their past and what would help them to integrate
in our society in the best possible way. I am convinced that ignoring
all the stories that these people have been going through will never
allow us, Italians, to be able to have a relationship with them. I
believe that our government should make a big effort in trying to
communicate the culture of these people to us in order to make the
future coexistence of Italians from different ethnic groups possible.
In
the recent campaign for general elections there has not been a serious
debate about environmental sustainability. This is an issue that is
driving most of the choices in my private life. I think the government
should acknowledge the importance of this issue and shape its
policies according to it.
UN ACTIVITIES/INITIATIVES
I
think UN doesn't have a problem in terms of what is doing, and anyway I
wouldn't be the right person to debate it, but often it is not easy to
know what kind of activities it is running.
Optional Questions
6-
I believe a good way to introduce people who are not yet aware of the
importance of a CoP would be through the promotion of festivals that on
one hand could be attractive for the entertainment they will offer
while at the same time can talk about relevant issues related to the
culture they are promoting. I am imagining for example "The month of
Brazil", a festival promoting Brazilian culture, such as music, dance,
film, theatre, art but also food and history. People that will
participate in the shows will be likely to get to know the cultural
background in which the art they are enjoying was born and developed. I am convinced that this kind of events, going to the grassroots, are much more effective than a large-scale press campaigns. And
I also believe that the duration of a campaign is very important. In a
project like this different small or medium events will be offered over
a month period. By the end of the festival people will feel used to
Brazilian culture and will consider it as part of their own experience.
7- I know different organizations that work in this direction and I will be happy to contact them if you will need me to. These are two most interesting one I would suggest at the moment: Photovoice, United Kingdom Acmos, Italy
