Questionnaire

1.a) Bilateral and multilateral student exchange programmes and study visits, international conferences on human rights and international law.

b) Information about events, contact details.

c) Most of ELSA’s current activities such as local, national and international seminars and conferences, international study visits, moot court competitions, legal research groups and student trainee exchange programmes already fit under the description of CoP. Our vision is “A just world in which there is respect for human dignity and cultural diversity” and Human Rights is an area that is always in focus for our Association. Therefore we would most probably continue to organize youth activities such as the ones described above but to a larger extent and with more focus on the international aspects.

d) We basically have all the preconditions for organizing these kinds of activities as regards to human resources, well established network and cooperation with institutions, universities and externals. The only thing which is a constant battle is funding.

2.a) As ELSA is an international association with member groups in 35 countries in Europe it is hard for us to answer this question. To give an answer based on the situation in Belgium where we have our head office is rather pointless.

b) International youth conferences and similar larger events but mainly to give support to initiatives by NGOs in the field of CoP. As for our association, the main need of support is financial such.

OPTIONAL QUESTIONS

3. It is all about making activities easy accessible. This means basically removing obstacles in the way of the individual youth to the international CoP activity. Those obstacles could be difficulties in getting information about events, participation fees, travel costs etc. A lot of these obstacles could be removed if the organizing party receives the proper support from for example different institutions.

6. See the answer to question 3

7.a)There are a lot of international student organizations working for a CoP or at least as the case is with us, where the key elements of  the CoP is integrated in their activities on an international level. However, I do not think that our possibilities of listing them is any better than your organization’s.

8. My response to this questionnaire is my organisation’s opinion

Dear Jo,

I have checked with the rest of my board members and you are free to go ahead and use those quotes if you like.

If you could also send me the compiled report that you will present to the UN later this month when it is ready I would be very grateful.

Best wishes and good luck with the report,

/Nils
