QUESTIONNAIRE

Firstly) Is your organization youth-led or primarily youth-serving? Please explain briefly.

It is led by youth, founded by youth and directed at youth. We accept only youth as members. Organisations can be supporters but not members.

1. INDIVIDUAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES

a) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a culture of peace (CoP) would you like to do as an individual?

More outreaching about nuclear weapons issues, more lobbying in favour of nuclear disarmament. We are thinking about launching a European campaign thanks to a communication consultant, a TV campaign would be great.

b) What non-financial support would you need to do these activities?

We are all benevolent, so we do not have enough time for all we would like  to do. We also need technical help: we are making a DVD, building a website,.. we need more people and more skills.

c) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a CoP would your organization like to do?

Trainings: we would like to go everywhere we could (schools, meetings, festivals,...) to explain what nuclear weapons are, their effects, why they are illegal, how much they cost, and explain also that there are other ways to solve conflict than killing each other.

d) What non-financial support would your organization need to do these activities?

Support to have places to explain all that: permission to go in schools, support from local city halls or organisations to come and talk to people.

2. SUPPORT FROM GOVERNMENT AND THE UN

a) What changes in youth policies do you think the government/leadership in your country should make to promote a CoP?

Trust youth more. Entrusting them with responsibilities, supporting their initiatives so that they gain self-confidence and confidence they are accepted by their community/country as full members. Listening more to them.

b) What CoP youth activities do you think the UN should carry out?

I do not know. But the opposite could be done: the UN could ask youth what they would like to do to promote CoP and what they would like the UN to do to help them in their project. And the UN decided to support the ones it likes best.

OTHER QUESTIONS

3. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for improving youth participation in CoP activities on any level (UN, government, civil  society)?

Youth do not know what CoP is about -adults neither. People cannot participate in things they do not know about. So first thing is informing. Then it should be taught at school, as part of the normal curriculum.

4. What could be done to improve/ensure transparency and flow of information in promoting the CoP?

Leaflets or hand-outs NGOs could distribute during their events or on Sept 21. Documentaries -people watch TV. We have TV games where people earn money answering questions; sometimes they play for NGOs: why not asking famous people to play for the UN and the promotion of CoP? Again, teaching it at school: we have a module in junior high school about being a good and informed citizen in France, it could be part of this module.

5. To ensure the best possible benefit of a UN Voluntary Fund for youth on the CoP, how should it be managed/administered?

Ask involved youth to define its rules; ask them the criteria to choose the youth projects the UN would fund. Youth members with adults members; youth could be volunteer but paid for the job done, it should be recognised as real involvement, even if the amount is low: anyway, they will do it during their free time, so not many hours a week. The 'adults' would be there as experienced councellors, for support and advice. Any travels for meetings should be paid for, youth cannot afford that.

6. How can youth not yet involved in CoP activities be reached and motivated to get involved?

Youth like having fun, so the funnier the activities, the more they would take part in them. Role-plays, theatres, teaching other people,... North people go to the South and vice-versa: they like travelling and discovering new cultures, new people. They like learning. And it opens their mind to new  scope of application of CoP.

7. a) Which other organizations do you know of, that work for a CoP?

Mouvement de la Paix (France): www.mvtpaix.org.

b) Would you be willing to contact them or may we contact them with the questionnaire? Please specify.

You can contact them but currently they have a technical problem and have lost Internet connection. Try: nadia@mvtpaix.org. She regularly checks the NGO's mails.

8. My response to this questionnaire is my personal opinion ? _?

Personal opinion. I am the co-founder of BANg.
