Pakistan, Youth Alliance for Human Rights
Firstly) Is your organization youth-led or primarily youth-serving? Please explain briefly
Youth
Alliance For Human Rights is a youth-led and youth-focused organization
working in different parts of Pakistan with more than 1200 members.
1. INDIVIDUAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES
a) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a culture of peace (CoP) would you like to do as an organization?
As
I'm a human rights and peace activist and I live in a region where
there is a dire need to educate and empower young people about the
importance of peace education so I think upon availability of funds my
prime focus would be on the following.
- Peace education curriculum development - Training of core trainers - Regular peace education workshops for youth (both in school and out of school)
- Networking with Indian youth organization through our network
of Indo-Pak Youth Forum For Peace and other involved Indian
organizations to start combined peace education workshops in our
neighbouring countries.
b) What non-financial support would you need to do these activities?
In
our opinion financial support is not every thing and we know so many
groups who have funds but they don't have capacity to work so we reckon
capacity building of our staff/members/volunteers is equally important
and imperative. We further need to equip ourselves with the modern
techniques and tactics people using all over the world in engaging
young people in peace education programs.
2. SUPPORT FROM GOVERNMENT AND THE UN
a) What changes in youth policies do you think the government/leadership in your country should make to promote a CoP?
We
are really fortunate to be an organization who worked very closely with
Ministry of Youth Affairs, Government of Pakistan for formulation of
national youth policy in Pakistan and we organized consultation
workshops in all the major cities of Pakistan. In the final proposed
draft of national youth policy that is still under the process of final
approval from the president's office and federal cabinet we made some
recommendation regarding inclusion of peace and human rights education
in the national youth policy and we hope that we'll soon have a
comprehensive youth policy to start working.
b) What CoP youth activities do you think the UN should carry out?
We
think the UN should support in every mean possible youth initiatives in
different parts of the world and to highlight the importance of young
people's participation in various UN peace endeavours there should be
more publications and tools (including online tools). The UN should
also facilitate participation of young people in various UN
conferences/seminars on peace education and try to play a role of a
bridge between the youth organizations and UN specialized agencies.
3.
Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for improving youth
participation in CoP activities on any level (UN, government, civil
society)?
We should try to encourage more and more youth
organizations to work for CoP and for various reasons we should focus
in the following manner.
*For Advocacy & Lobbying.*
- International Youth Organizations (both intergovernmental and non-governmental) like GYAN, WAY.
- Regional Youth Organizations (both intergovernmental and
non-governmental) like Asian Youth Council, European Youth Council.
*For execution and ground implementation.*
- National Youth Councils - Youth NGOs - Community based youth groups - Student bodies - NGOs with focus on youth and peace.
7. a) Which other organizations do you know of, that work for a CoP?
Indo-Pak Youth Forum For Peace (interested in India + Pakistan)
b) Would you be willing to contact them or may we contact them with the questionnaire? Please specify.
We can contact them and it depends upon the consent of the core administration.
8. My response to this questionnaire is my Organization's opinion.
