QUESTIONNAIRE

Firstly Is your organization youth-led or primarily youth-serving? Please explain briefly.

Youth Initiative is a youth-led and youth run organization working to empower young people and bringing about positive changes in the society through them.
Youth Initiative started out as a much felt-need of a platform for young people to voice their opinions and involve themselves in issues that concerns them. Youth Initiative strongly believes that '' Young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but are also the equal partners of today."

Youth Initiative today is a collage of ideas and efforts of numerous young people. To achieve its vision, Youth Initiative works in various issues using different tools and interventions; from raising awareness to policy advocacy; from organizing workshops to undertaking research; from life skills development to strengthening youth politics; etc.
Even when, youth Initiative remains as a recognized youth organization at national and international level, it is run entirely by dedicated young members and individuals who mostly commit themselves as volunteers.

1. INDIVIDUAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES

a) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a culture of peace (CoP) would you like to do as an individual?

N/A

b) What non-financial support would you need to do these activities?

N/A

c) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a CoP would your organization like to do?

Youth Participation in democratization of Nepal in the present changed political scenario is one of the important areas which we are planning to work on. Raising civic awareness amongst youths and encouraging their participation in the civil and political issues and thus promoting the culture of active citizenship is our priority area. Similarly, promoting entrepreneurial culture and the involvement of the young people in community development through small, innovative and self led projects which harnesses the message of participation and help build harmony is another area which we have prioritised.

d) What non-financial support would your organization need to do these activities?

Trainings and study tours can help us to learn form the experts and similar cases.

2. SUPPORT FROM GOVERNMENT AND THE UN

a) What changes in youth policies do you think the government/leadership in your country should make to promote a CoP?

We have been advocating for a youth policy in Nepal as there is none. A draft youth policy was formed before which was incomplete in itself and never progressed from being a draft.

Youth Policy should be formed with wide consultation with the stakeholders, the youth. Youth Policy should focus on the participation of youths in the decision making and planning process. Youth should be prioritised with opportunities like access to information, education, employment, decision making beside others. Policy should be able to address youth as major stakeholder rather than the target group. Youth should be treated as part of the solution not the problem.

b) What CoP youth activities do you think the UN should carry out?

UN should increase the opportunities for young people to be directly involved in such initiatives. Symbolic participation should be replaced by meaningful active involvement.

UN should also create funds where only youth-led organisations can apply for support to carry out their CoP activities.

UN should also create international and regional platforms where youth organisations involved in CoP activities can come together for sharing and exchange of information and experiences.

OTHER QUESTIONS

3. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for improving youth participation in CoP activities on any level (UN, government, civil society)?

At each Level, We should focus on - Diversifying the planning body (central structure) responsible for CoP activities as far as possible. Involving young people representing every geographies, regions, sub-regions and if possible countries will help incorporate voices from every corner. This will also promote the feeling of ownership amongst youths and take responsibility of their actions promoting the culture of peace.

4. What could be done to improve/ensure transparency and flow of information in promoting the CoP?

We can focus on –
– Diversifying the planning and implementing body of CoP Activities involving more youths representing all the regions.
– Availability of information in local languages in coordination with the local youth organizations.
– Local Youth Organizations should be encouraged and involved to carry out the activities promoting CoP.

5. To ensure the best possible benefit of a UN Voluntary Fund for youth on the CoP, how should it be managed/administered?

It shouldn't only be managed by an adult board of directors. There should be youth in the government/ management board of the fund administration committee.

The process should be very transparent and widely promoted so that youth organisations know about this and can be a part of the funding.

Where needed, the youth organisations could also be mentored by adult driven organisations.

6. How can youth not yet involved in CoP activities be reached and motivated to get involved?

Youth Organizations can play a very important role in spreading this message and involving more youths in CoP Activities.

Program should be designed in consultation with the local youth organisations.

7. a) Which other organizations do you know of, that work for a CoP?

There are many youth organisations in our network. Some of them are -

United Youth, Youth Action Nepal, Youth For Change, Yuwa Forum etc.

b) Would you be willing to contact them or may we contact them with the questionnaire? Please specify.

We will contact them as we locally work in partnership with them in our common areas.

8. My response to this questionnaire is my personal opinion/ organization's opinion?

It is our organisation's opinion.
