questionnaire from Youth Affairs Council, Western Australia:
1. a) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a CoP would your organization like to do?
Currently
we run youth and 'sector' (i.e., youth service agencies) training on a
range of issues: housing and tenancy rights, health and well-being etc.
Most of our programs are reactive rather than proactive due to limited
funds and the urgency of the issue. With extra funding YACWA would be
keen to engage youth directly in human rights training in an effort to
creatively empowering young people and those you serve young people to
1. Understand the system of rights and responsibilities according to
international standards and the states (Australia's) obligations; 2.
Advocate on issues that matter to them and, 3. Promote a culture of
tolerance and understanding via cultivating rights based dialogue. We
have learnt that the strongest voice comes form those whose rights are
directly affected We use Arts as a method of engaging Young People in
the Democratic process.
b) What non-financial support does your organization need to do these activities?
We need higher levels of staffing, bigger space to operate in: other community spaces available. Marketing and promotion support
2. b) What CoP youth activities/initiatives do you think the UN should do?
YACWA is not familiar with current UN programs
OPTIONAL QUESTIONS
3.
Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for improving youth
participation in CoP activities on any levels (UN, government, civil
society)?
Creative engagement and Open Space activities that engage young people in issues that affect them.
4. What could be done to improve/ensure transparency and flow of information in promoting the CoP?
State
and local governments do not understand and, for the most part, are
poorly equipped to engage and consult with young people in the creation
of youth friendly spaces and in including young people in helping to
solve youth specific issues: i.e., health, public space, employment
etc.
5. To ensure the best possible benefit of a UN Voluntary Fund for youth and CoP, how should it be managed/administered?
Project
proposal and approval with set criteria as to expectations and
outcomes. Managed, reported and evaluated by direct service provider
and validated by the funding agency with a mandate for follow up.
6. How can youth not yet involved in CoP activities be reached and motivated?
YACWA
has an enormous reach/access to young people through direct service
providers and independent youth workers. YACWA recognises that the
internet is an excellent medium to reach urban and rural youth yet
currently does not have the resources or funds to utilize this
resource.
