1. a) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a CoP would you like to do as an individual? Facilitate
partnership programs between young people in juvenile detention and
young people in leadership positions in their schools, focusing on
conflict transformation and youth activism. b) What non-financial support do you need to do these activities? I
would need support from schools, the education department and the
justice system, as well as administration support in organizing the
project. c) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a CoP would your organization like to do? I
am founder and Creative Director of EPYC (Empowering Peacemakers in
Your Community) running conflict transformation seminars in high
schools and primary schools. The project is run out of SU Western
Australia who operate with the aim of ‘bringing hope to young people.’
EPYC educates young people on nonviolent alternatives to conflict
resolution, youth activism, and the history of peace activism. The
program also facilitates the exploration of what a spirituality of
non-violence means for the participants and how they can apply this at
home, school, and in the wider and global community. If financial
support were available we would train up additional EPYC presenters
allowing the project to grow—reaching more young Australians.
EPYC would also explore the idea of fostering interfaith dialogue
among young people equipping them with the tools to mine their own
traditions as sources of transformative non-violence. d) What non-financial support does your organization need for CoP activities?
SU and the EPYC program could benefit from wider recognition by
government, and educational bodies and further endorsement from
respected organizations and community members.
2. a) What changes in youth policies do you think the government/leadership in your country should make to promote a CoP?
If creating a CoP is a priority then government funding for peace
education in schools should be made widely available. Conflict
transformation and non-violence training should be included in standard
curriculum at least on a community level, with opportunity for young
people to learn about global applications. These funds should foster
community initiatives rather than top down agendas. b) What CoP youth activities/initiatives do you think the UN should do? We would like to invite you to endorse our program, and other similar grassroots projects around the world.
OPTIONAL QUESTIONS 3.
Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for improving youth
participation in CoP activities on any levels (UN, government, civil
society)? Once more I encourage you to endorse or support
grassroots programs that are already aimed at young people and have
access to schools and youth projects. 4. What could be done to improve/ensure transparency and flow of information in promoting the CoP? Further education through school programs, and government run youth initiatives, such as drop in and youth centres. 5. To ensure the best possible benefit of a UN Voluntary Fund for youth and CoP, how should it be managed/administered?
Funding should be administered through closely monitored community
groups, not for profit and non government organizations with a mission
for helping young people and a heart for furthering a CoP without a
business agenda. 6. How can youth not yet involved in CoP activities be reached and motivated?
Once more, I cannot highlight enough the importance of school based
education programs, and youth initiatives. That is where the young
people are. 7. a) Which other organizations do you know of, that work for a CoP? EPYC and SUWA are in partnership with a number of projects that work towards a CoP, such as TEAR Australia and Pace Bene. b) Would you be willing to contact them or may we contact them with the questionnaire? Please specify. You may contact them with the questionnaire if you like.
