Chair of our National Youth Council, Scouts Australia :

1. a) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a CoP would your organization like to do?

For Scouting, I think we need to work on developing more 'Scouts of the World' projects to help educate our youth members about the importance of being a global citizen and what it means to help those in need.  The program incorporates training and awareness raising concepts along with the opportunity to partake a service project to make a real difference. These core values are certainly in line I believe with the principles of any Scouts of the World project. Peace is one of the 3 focuses of the Scouts of the World program which is Scoutings primary contribution to meeting the UN's MDG's. More information on the program is available from www.youthoftheworld.net

b) What non-financial support does your organization need to do these activities?

I think perhaps help with identification of possible project areas in regions around the world and then secondly help in establishing networks for support and regional contacts. As well as providing some opportunities for service I see a place for UN agencies to provide materials and perhaps guest presenters for the training component of SoW. The relevant agencies involved in Peace, Development and Environment are very well placed to provide expert advice, information and real life experience to our members.

2. b) What CoP youth activities/initiatives do you think the UN should do?

I think the UN should hold a summit inviting young people from around to world to focus on establishing initiatives that young people from around the world can adopt in the local area to establish a CoP.  This is something that needs to be present in the surrounding community before it can be achieved at a global scale. The think global act local saying is very appropriate here.  I would think that the concept of peace is a global idea and hope but needs to be implemented locally. I think by holding workshops training youth in areas, they can make real change and then these examples can be used as case studies and great examples of what can be done with a bit of effort and a focus on Peace.

OPTIONAL QUESTIONS

3. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for improving youth participation in CoP activities on any levels (UN, government, civil society)?

I think the best thing is to ensure the support networks are in placed to provide young people with the motivation and encouragement to be involved- this may come from a range of support sources like those mentioned above ie. UN, governments, civil society. . I think its vital that the UN involve existing Youth organizations as these organizations already have links with youth

4. What could be done to improve/ensure transparency and flow of information in promoting the CoP?

I think there needs to be an outline of goals and objectives that the UN hopes to achieve. More awareness raising (probably through the channel in 3.) , perhaps tying it to the MDG's would show where it fits in in the bigger picture.

5. To ensure the best possible benefit of a UN Voluntary Fund for youth and CoP, how should it be managed/administered?

I think a board should be established with representatives from several participating countries as well as youth representatives to ensure the emphasis is placed on establishing and funding projects that young people value. Youth Organisations would then apply to this board with projects to funded that support the goals of CoP

6. How can youth not yet involved in CoP activities be reached and motivated?

I think one of the best ways is through a detailed and interactive website, which could also build a virtual  CoP and build global links between young people. Once again Youth organistations are a good target to get to most youth, however individuals need to reached as well. I think showing the outcomes and hopes and how this ties in with MDG's and how it can have a real effect on the World. Case example of positive outcomes can be used.
