(may
be quoted - see below) Interview July 30 with DG Kang, Director
of the Asia-Pacific Center of Education for International
Understanding.
1a) If funds were available, what youth
activities related to a CoP would APCEIU like to do?
Since in
the Asia-Pacific region, development of leadership in schools and
the civil society are needed in order to promote a culture of peace,
APCEIU would continue and expand our training of Young Peace
Messengers, and strengthen the network of Young Peace Messengers who
have already been trained.
By cultivating their networking
and leadership, we can give them more opportunity to be active in
the movement for peace, and to expand the meaning of peace so that
it encompasses all aspects of a culture of peace. It can give
them to opportunity to practice a culture of peace in their daily
life.
APCEIU is focusing on teacher-training for a culture of
peace in schols, for peaceful school life connected to peace in
daily life. Teacher-training has become our major development
plan.
1b) What non-financial support does your organization
need for CoP activities?
We already operate within the
strategic objectives of UNESCO, including the guidelines for the
International Year and Decade for a Culture of Peace. Support
from the United Nations would help revitalize these activities.
2a) What other CoP activities/initiatives do you think
the UN should do?
There are many discussions underway on
youth participation. In general youth need more spaces for
their participation and more channels for them to communicate their
ideas for the future.
3. What changes in youth policies do
you think governments should make to promote a CoP?
In the
Asian situation, there are youth gatherings, but the social system
tends not to give youth a role in decision-making. We urge
governments to give more of a place to youth.
4. What could
be done to improve/ensure transparency and flow of information in
promoting the CoP?
Sometimes it is not clear who is active or
who is responsible for culture of peace in some countries. It
is a challenge for us to identify partners who can be reliable
counterparts for APCEIU in each country. It requires us to
help with the leadership training of youth organizations.
We
support youth-initiated activities, but the youth need to learn from
experience and to receive the resources and funds in order to be
effective.
6. How can youth not yet involved in CoP
activities be reached and motivated?
APCEIU can develop Youth
Peace Messenger projects in Asia, training more Peace Messengers to
work in our countries, coordinating their activities and spreading
the idea to youth throughout the region.
A last
word?
Yes, what is needed is to promote the leadership of
youth for a cutlure of peace and inter-cultural
understanding.
