1. a) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a CoP would you to do as an individual?
I
will want to train youths periodically from the six-geo-political
zones of Nigeria on various thematic areas of the culture of
peace (Cop)
b) What non-financial support do you need to do these activities?
I
need technical support by way of holistic peace module and
updated peace-oriented educational materials including internet access
to help us in the on-line training and current peace-oriented
information available on the internet.
c) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a CoP would your organization like to do?
My
organisation will identify all the crisis-prone areas in Nigeria, select
some youths in each area and train them on non-violent approach to
conflict resolution and reconciliation. For instance the youth militias
abound in the country will be selected as part of the trainees
thus:Bakassi Boys,OPC,Egbesu Youtha,Arewa Youths,Ijaw Youth Movement
and other violent separatist movements etc.
d) What non-financial support does your organization need for CoP activities?
UNOY
NIGERIA will need capacity building of their executive members across
the six- geo-political zones of the country on at least four thematic
areas of the culture of Peace to enable them(the executive members)have
the required and necessary skills and technical know-how for the
training.
We also need a high quality internet connectivity with
computers in a co-ordinated network to facilitate our work among the
poorest of the poor youths . Currently, the internet system we
access in business centres and Cyber Café’in developing
countries are very bad and frustrating that one can spend days in
a Cyber Café’ to send an attached mail which may eventually bounce back.
The
Executive members who will be trained as suggested above will in
turn step down the training among the youths from the
6-geo-political zones of Nigeria,periodically .
2. a) What changes in youth policies do you think the government/leadership in your country should make to promote a CoP?
The
Government in Nigeria should try to involve the youths in all
youth-related Peace policies in the three tier of the government
thus:the federal, the state and the local government.
The
government in these 3 tiers of should create youth-related
portfolio for a culture of peace for example there may be,
Federal,State,Local Director of Culture of Peace respectively
(Cop)to be headed by a young person based on merit. This office
will be charged with everything concerning youths as per Cop.
Youths
should be involved fully in the planning passing in to law and the
final implementation of all youth policies.Youths should be appointed
in the position of power ,authority and influence. The marginalised
youths in Nigeria for example the youths from the Niger-Delta or those
from the Poorest of the Poor communities should be empowered to reduce
the rate of violence that has engulfed the country as a result of these
youths trying to survive by resorting to violence
,assassination, kidnapping, arson and all sorts of atrocities to survive.
b) What CoP youth activities/initiatives do you think the UN should do?
UN
should set up a youth award for the culture of peace where youths
who have made creative contributions on the field(Cop)should be
honoured with financial rewards and a trip to the UN secretariat
perhaps a handcheck /photograph with the UN Sec.Gen. This innovation
will encourage youths to be positive and work towards the award instead
of being a ready-made tool for politicians in violence, thuggrey
,assassination and other forms of dastardly acts.
UN should try
to vote a reasonable fund to the youths from the developing countries
especially Sub-Saharan Africa who wallow in abject
poverty, penury, and utter deprivation. With hungry and misery etc as in
the case with youths of the developing countries youths are
easily pushed to violence.
3. Do you have any suggestions or
recommendations for improving youth participation in CoP activities on
any levels (UN, government, civil society)?
The UN,government
and Civil society should create enough awareness on the culture of
peace as currently the awreness is at the lowest nadir. The youths
should be informed and well educated on Cop for them to be carried
along in all its ramifications.
4.What could be done to improve/ensure transparency and flow of information in promoting the CoP?
There
must be a systematic and well-co-ordinated monitoring and evaluation
mechanism .Electronic and print media should be used periodically to
create awereness on the Cop.
5.To ensure the best possible return of a voluntary fund for youth and CoP, how should it be managed/administered?
The
fund should be managed by an appropriate staff from the UN Youth Unit
or the co-ordinators of the Youths on the Culture of Peace project with
consultations from youth representatives elected from all the regions
of the world based on their track record on peace
6. How can youth not yet involved in CoP activities be reached and motivated?
A
Youth Network like ours (UNOY NIGERIA)can use our National spread and
wide acceptance having membership among the six-geo-political
zones of Nigeria to call a National Youth Meeting where youths could be
educated as per the benefit and otherwise of the Cop.
7.a) Which other organizations do you know of, that work for a CoP?
I have also fowarded the questionnaire to Genuine Youth organisations working on peace and related issues.
b) Would you be willing to contact them or may we contact them with the questionnaire? Please specify.
I
have already contacted the 19 organisations listed on page
24 (under Nigeria )of the world report on the culture of peace
coordinated by David Adams.(2005) 8.My response to this questionnaire is organisation’s opinion
