1. a) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a CoP would you to do as an individual? -Education on Culture of peace -Empowerment on human rights -Democratic participation by youth (encouraging youth to get into politics) -Promote Gender Equality among youth -Develop young peace ambassadors
b) What non-financial support do you need to do these activities? -Technical
backstopping by international experts on capacity building at the local
level where Kenya Youth Foundation works on Culture of Peace -Establishment of e-lobbying systems (websites, group-emails, e-charts and e-conferences) -Production of publicity materials (posters, T-shirts, Caps, fliers, training manuals, brochures, banners, post cards) -Exchange programme for experiential learning on success stories
c) If funds were available, what youth activities related to a CoP would your organization like to do? -Capacity building on CoP thematic issues -Establishment
of a coalition of CoP nationwide with a functioning secretariat to
propagate the CoP agenda from local to international level -Develop a Participatory National Action Plan for CoP in Kenya targeting the conflict hot spots in Kenya -Recognize the efforts of young people in promoting a culture of peace through annual awards to promote best practice -Organize International Conventions to come up with resolutions towards promotion of a culture of peace to be presented to UN

2.
a) What changes in youth policies do you think the
government/leadership in your country should make to promote a CoP? -Putting
in place a working and participatory national youth policy. Most of the
existing policies that are to promote the interest of youth are
developed for them and hence have failed to address the challenges
facing the youth -Enhanced capacity building to promote human values among young people -Create
an enabling socio-economic environment to enable youth participate in
wealth creation. In a situation where the cost of borrowing money is
way above the capacity of youth, is likely to be a breeding ground for
trouble. If there cannot create wealth then more employment
opportunities created for young people. -Recognize the role of young
people in the National Role of Honour. In Kenya only adults are always
short-listed for awards during the National Holidays. The youth are
always left behind despite some efforts they put in making the country
a better place.
b) What CoP youth activities/initiatives do you think the UN should do?
-Establishment of Global Fund for promotion of youth related CoP activities -Upgrade
the UN Youth Department to a full agency as it has been done for Women,
Children, HIV/AIDS, Food, and Environment among others. A deliberate
effort to transit UNICEF efforts to UN Youth Agency will help the World
to address the current challenges facing the young people of the world.
No serious programme exists which is addressing the challenges of the
youth. -Develop Global Action Plan for countries to implement and assessed every year by a panel of Youth experts and activists
OPTIONAL QUESTIONS 3.
Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for improving
youth participation in CoP activities on any levels (UN, government,
civil society)?
A good programme is judged based on resource
availability for implementation and political good will. While
political good will can not be given on a silver platter, access of
resources to enhance advocacy will have a monumental impact for
political elites to give in for us to have a better world to live in.
4. What could be done to improve/ensure transparency and flow of information in promoting the CoP?
There
must be awareness creation among the population to demand for
transparency and flow of information. It has worked. In the developing
world clamor for democratic reform is yielding fruit but after a
serious struggle through civic education and empowerment of the
governed.
5. To ensure the best possible return of a voluntary fund for youth and CoP, how should it be managed/administered?
-There
is need for International Steering Committee responsible for Youth and
CoP activities. It must have Executive Secretary for day to day
management of resources and disbursement of funds to CoP activities.
The Committee will do the fundraising for the fund/kitty
-There
is need for Country Chapters headed by Country Focal Organization.
There shall be responsible for coming up with Country activities Plan
of Action with budget. They shall receive the funds for implementing
activities and account for the resources disbursed to them for
implementing activities on yearly basis.
-The International
Steering Committee will hire monitoring and Evaluation Experts to
review activities implemented if their meeting the set targets. This
will enable the ISC to review Plan of Action for realization of the CoP
objectives
6. How can youth not yet involved in CoP activities be reached and motivated?
The
existing youth organizations involved to start local chapters by
organizing awareness events and the motivation is through phased
approach in implementing CoP activities using the known youth
organizations through a mini-grant. This will set the pace for
organizing the Strategy Plan. The results from pocket activities funded
by mini-grant would help in developing the strategy Plan.
7. a) Which other organizations do you know of, that work for a CoP? None
