ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

The Foundation for Universal Responsibility of His Holiness The Dalai Lama is a not for profit, non-sectarian, non-denominational organization established with the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to His Holiness in 1989. In the spirit of the Charter of the United Nations, the Foundation brings together men and women of different faiths, professions and nationalities, through a range of initiatives and mutually sustaining collaborations.
The work of the Foundation is global in its reach and transcends nationalist political agendas.

securing human rights and democratic freedoms, and on conserving
and restoring our precious Mother Earth."

Our Mission is:
To promote universal responsibility in a manner that
respects difference and encourages a diversity of
beliefs and practices.
To build a global ethic of nonviolence, coexistence,
gender equity and peace by facilitating processes of
personal and social change.
To enrich educational paradigms that tap
the transformative potential of the human kind.
Our Areas of Action are:-
• Interfaith Dialogue: In an effort to build cross-cultural understanding and encourage spiritual enquiry through the first hand exploration of different faith traditions, the Foundation brings together groups of young people for Interfaith Dialogues. The participants go through an experiential journey that spans different religious beliefs and practices. While staying in monasteries, ashrams and other spiritual and religious centers, students devote time studying and exploring the basic tenets of Christianity, Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Jainism and other lesser-known faiths. They interact with religious philosophers and masters who share with them religious tenets and spiritual practices. The program includes lectures, discussions and films on the rituals and history of various religions.
• Student Interface: The Foundation sponsors annual inter-college and inter-school interactions and debates on contemporary issues such as the ‘Relevance of Nonviolence in South Asia’, ‘Sustainable and Transformative Development’, ‘Social Will and Political Action’, and ‘Tolerance and Coexistence’. This forms part of the efforts of the Foundation to facilitate a discourse among the next generation of leaders, on issues of multiculturalism, pluralism, secularism and universal responsibility.
• Gurukul: In keeping with the rich Indian tradition of Gurukul, this project enriches formal education processes by facilitating inspirational contact with masters of different spiritual traditions, particularly Tibetan Buddhism. The participants, mainly university students, live in Tibetan monasteries and nunneries where they learn about Tibetan culture, art and philosophy.
• Peacemakers Lecture Series: Peacemakers is a lecture series designed to invigorate the discourse on peacebuilding and nonviolence in South Asia and the world.This series creates an interactive space for experienced peacemakers to share their insights and lessons learned, for emerging peace scholars to present new methods for building peace and for grassroots peacemakers to illuminate effective strategies being practiced in local contexts. This lecture series seeks to inspire and empower people to participate actively in everyday peacemaking in order to transform the conflicts in local communities, South Asia and the world, into long-term sustainable peace.
• The Scholar of Peace Fellowships are awarded under three categories:Academic Research, Media Projects and Special Projects. The awards cover periods ranging from three months to one year
• The Foundation holds Film Festivals and collaborative interactions on themes such as nonviolence, spirituality, interfaith dialogue, sustainable living and Buddhism, to name a few.It organizes regular film screenings in partnership with the India International Center under the aegis of a Spiritual Cinema Circle. Members view and discuss films and the philosophies they embody, representing different creeds and faith. Representing diverse traditions and historical contexts, some of the films are: A History of God, Jesus of Nazareth, The Tibetan Book of the Dead, The Mahabharata, The Making of the Mahatma, Rumi etc.
• The Foundation produces print and audiovisual material on themes and issues related to its mission. It houses a library of books, journals and films on subjects such as universal responsibility, nonviolence, peacebuilding, gender studies and Tibetan Buddhism. Many lectures and talks are also available as published compilations.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

We have functioned in this field for nearly 20 years and have seen transformation of individuals who have undergone he exploration with us towards more mindful living. However peace is not goal or merely a journey in itself it is both and needs constant attention to promote and practice.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?


PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?


GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

• Foster the celebration of diversity, the spirit of universal responsibility and the understanding of interdependence across faiths, creeds and religions.
• Support personal transformation in ways that facilitate larger processes of social change.
• Develop and sustain peacebuilding and coexistence initiatives in regions of violent conflict and social unrest.
• Encourage and cultivate Ahimsa (nonviolence) as a guiding principle for interaction among human beings and with their environments.
• Offer inclusive and holistic paradigms of education that prioritize experiential learning, cross-cultural dialogue, and a global ethic of peace and justice.
• Build capacity for conflict transformation, human rights and democratic freedom through partnerships with civil society groups across the globe.
• Explore new frontiers on understanding of the mind by building bridges between science and spirituality.
• Support the professional development of future leaders and decision-makers through scholarships and fellowships.
• Create media products and educational materials that promote the objectives of the Foundation.
