ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

Our activities are educational with a focus of providing the beneficairies with a means of livelihood and the needed skills to enable them to have an improved standard of living. We have four Vocational Schools in Lagos, Enugu, Oyo and Ogun States which give training in Catering and Hospitality to young women. The training they receive in these Schools empower them to be able to apply in the labour market for jobs, thereby reducing the stress and anxiety that is related to unemployment. This, we believe will have effect in the family and society, as the girls when they are gainfully employed will be less prone to acts that will create violence or disturb the peace in the society.

Women participate in short Culinary courses and Home Mangement courses are organized for them.  The course enables them to establish small business so as to improve on the income and also be able to take proper care of their family and home.

We have also organized seminars on Personality and Leadership Development for undergraduates of universities. These seminars are directed at helping them to grow in values such as justice, fortitude, having a spirit of service and being generous.  The appreciation of a culture of life to build up a culture of peace is a recurrent feature  in the training.  Some of the topics treated recently are 'Communication in the home','Know your Temperament','Cultural Awareness' 'Developing One's Personality', 'Human Sexuality: Its Challenges for Young people' , 'When Character Building Fails', 'Dignity of the Person and Respect for Human Life' and 'Etiquette: The Practice of Good Manners'.

Some seminars are also directed towards women who run small businesses and members of staff of NGOs. The topics treated in these seminars/workshops are chosen to help them run their businesses well and to understand the human personality, the society and culture.

All these activities  help in promoting a culture of peace and non violence in the society.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

The security of the populace is at stake as we notice an increase in the incidence of armed robbery and kidnapping of people both local and foreigners in the country. This act has shown that though the government, organizations and individuals are trying to develop and maintain a culture of peace and nonviolence, we still have some work to do. We would not say that there has been much progress and this can be attributed to lack of employment and also the morals to enable the perpetrators to realise that ttheir actions is dangerous to the society and it would not solve their problems.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

We have not faced any obstacle. Our programmes are accepted and the participants are always eager to participate in them.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??
