ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.


Yaounde: 60 from several youth associations from regions in and out of Africa, met for a cultural exchange for Peace and tolerance. There was a group picnic and a walk through the streets of the capital city. Organized by Servas Cameroon.


The Cameroon Association for the Protection and Education of the Child (CAPEC) arranged a projected presentation on Mother Theresa as a model of peace to leaders, especially to presidents of youth organizations in Yaounde, where the event was held. The presentation was followed by a painting competition on peace for children, a night vigil, peace exhibition, and peace doves.

The Life & Water Development Group- Cameroon organized a community event in Yaounde and Kumbo as part of their program of health training for kids, HIV/AIDS awareness, water related issues, with painting and drawing, etc. Their vision is to help the local communities, under privileged women, and children to improve health and education, and the rural population to live productive and peaceful lives in a healthy environment.


Cameroon Association for the Protection and Education of the Child (CAPEC) organized a series of activities in Yaounde in collaboration with the association “One Father”. The program included a painting competition for children 0-15 of age, a round table conference on Peace involving youth leaders and decision makers, a radio quiz on issues concerning world Peace and a music and prayer vigil. Diplomats, decision makers, youth association members and the general public were invited.

World Peace Prayer Society (WPPS) A conference was held in Yaounde on September 20, attended by the army, the police and representatives of the government. On September 21, there was a symbolic march of 3km, where participants sang the Peace Anthem. The group then gathered for further celebrations, a minute of silence at noon and the raising of flags representing all nations of the world. Mrs. Anne Sang of the UNDP Information Service read the speech by the UN Secretary-General. The final part of the program was a symbolic presentation of a Peace pole. The event was covered by the TV channel Canal 2.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

On a global level, reported events for the International Day of Peace continue to grow year after year (see the website listed above):

In the 2005 Report, 155 Peace Day events in 47 countries are presented.

The 2007 records show that:
* We had 623 commitments across the world
* 70 countries
* 225 cities (outside of the USA)
* 42 US states
* An estimate of nearly 500,000 participants
* An average of 500 people per event

2009 annual report listed 700+ events
