ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.


Moscow: A Peace ceremony took place for soldiers of the anti-fascist coalition in World War II, in cooperation with UN Information Centre in Moscow, civil society partners & the
Office of the UN Resident Coordinator. In attendance were 250 activists from the “Young Peacemakers” movement, and UN and Russian officials, who gathered at the “Poklonnaya Gora” memorial. It ended with a presentation of certificates to Moscow schools who qualify for the Network of Schools of Peace. Moscow (continued): Elsewhere, a discussion on “Peace Initiatives and Development” organized by Universal Peace Foundation and Institute of Languages and Cultures. 100 attended a screening of “The Day After Peace” followed by discussion and music.


UNICEF Over 500 children in Russia's North Caucasian republics of Ingushetia, Dagestan, North Ossetia and Kabardino-Balkaria learned about peace and tolerance in summer camps which cut across ethnic lines for 10 days starting on September 24th. By sharing and celebrating their different cultures, children learned to accept one another and discovered what they had in common.


Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University arranged a public program entitled “Return of the Happy Fortune” at the Moscow International House of Music, on September 18. The thought behind the event was that this is a time of deep changes, and that maybe it’s time to change the fortune of the world. The program joined together science, philosophy, art and real life stories and included musical performances, exhibitions and video novels.

The Moscow Chapter of Service For Peace organized two days of “Lessons of Peace”. 160 teens aged 13-16 joined in an exploration of Peacemaking, simple points about conflict resolution, explanation of UN initiatives and a role- laying training called “How to cooperate”. After the lessons there was a minute of silence and all participants had the opportunity to sign the “Pledge of Young Peacemakers”.

In the 2005 Report, 155 Peace Day events in 47 countries are presented.

The 2007 records show that:
* We had 623 commitments across the world
* 70 countries
* 225 cities (outside of the USA)
* 42 US states
* An estimate of nearly 500,000 participants
* An average of 500 people per event

2009 annual report listed 700+ events
