PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
We
have seen progress toward a culture of peace by monitoring the sales of
human rights and peace education materials with our Traveling Human
Rights and Peace Store and our on-line store at
www.humanrightsandpeacestore.org. In the past year our sales have
doubled and we are receiving requests to do more human rights trainings
in K-12 settings and more requests to do peace education artistry work.
Our book "Peacemaker's A,B,C's for Young Children: A Guide for teaching
conflict resolution with a peace table" is now used in over 6,000
locations worldwide. Our newly published book, "The Compassionate
Rebel: Energized by Anger, Motivated by Love" featuring how ordinary
citizens are making peace regardless of the challenges of daily life,
was selected as one of 20 books in the United States for creating
positive social change and is now slated for becoming a television
documentary. We have also been invited by a radio station to do
Compassionate Rebel Radio: Stories and News for Creating a Caring
Culture.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Our
biggest challenge has been a change in staff and having to take the
time to go go through a new learning curve. Our other co-director had
to leave due to family matters. We are also a small non-profit
organization and rely heavily on partnerships with others who are
extremely busy which causes delays. We also have more ideas than we can
possibly accomplish with our present size.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?

|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Just
as we would not expect children to solve complicated math problems with
a few weeks of classroom exposure, nor should we expect students to
create a culture of peace and nonviolence without a PreK-12 scope and
sequence of human rights and peace education.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
University
of Minnesota Human Rights Resource Center, Global Network of Huamn
Rights and Peace Educators, Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers,
International Peace Bureau, Hague Appeal for Peace, Peace and Justice
Network, Publishing companies that produce human rights and peace
education materials, Popular Educators Network, Violence Prevention
Coordinators, National Association of Multicutural Educators, Classroom
teachers
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |

educators, "Opening Doors: Participatory Leadership for Teens in the
21st Century," "Expanding the Circle: A Teen Mentoring Peacmaker's
Guide," "Compassionate Rebel II" and an on-line "Compassionate Rebel
