PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Education
for Conflict Resolution, Inc.(ECR), a community mediation center, has
been serving the state of Indiana since 1988 with mediation workshops
for school personnel/students, and trainings for businesses, churches
and community members at-large. ECR has increased it's mediation
services to schools by offering attendance/truancy mediations for
students in grades kindergarten thru high school and training others to
facilitate attendance/truancy mediations. ECR has developed a
training for male and female inmates in two local county jail systems.
This training will soon be expanded to include the family members of
inmates. ECR provides two thirty-two hour trainings each year to the
community to train volunteer mediators to mediate between family
members, neighbors, employees and organizations. ECR uses pre- and post-tests and narratives to measure gains in knowledge and understanding of conflict resolution skills.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
largest obstacle that ECR faces is a lack of funding from the state or
the federal government. We must spend a large amount of time writing
grants and fund raising. ECR is a small nonprofit and we must compete
with much larger organizations.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
ECR
has gathered people together in two small communities to celebrate the
International Day of Peace. We included presentations by student peer
mediators. ECR has developed and published a training resource for
students in upper elementary and high school. This interactive resource
teaches non-violent conflict resolution and communication skills.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Funding
should be redirected to organizations and nonprofits that are working
toward nonviolent means of creating a culture of peace.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
ECR is a member of the following: The National Association for Community Mediation The Indiana Network for Community Mediation
ECR networks with the World Friendship Center in Hiroshima, Japan ECR networks with several colleges to provide internships. ECR networks with schools, organizations, churches, correctional facilities and probation departments
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
ECR plans to expand our court referral sources for mediation.
