PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Yes.
Our mission is to promote a healthy, caring, and just community for all
people through resources, advocacy, and volunteer effort. We have seen
increased participation.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Government
policies (national, state, and county) have restricted the support of
and advancement of our clients. Funds have decreased, requirements for
help have increased, cost of living increases and wage stagnation have
added to the challenges for reaching a minimal standard of living
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
We have tried to lift up the issues of poverty and to educate the community about them. With
greater understanding the community has responded with generosity of
spirit and funds for our clients. We partner with many local groups
(see below).
We offer : --basic needs services of food, clothing, shelter and limited dental care --educational programming and leadership development for newcomers including immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers --extended housing options from temporary emergency aid to include permanent supportive housing, transitional housing, and eviction prevention --a Food Shelf and a Clothes Closet --advocacy interventions for medical needs, rental issues, immigration, and other needs
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
We
network with the Community in the largest sense --faith groups,
schools, medical providers and facilities, businesses, fraternal and
civic organizations, municipal and county and federal government, and
other private groups .
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
We
expect to have more contact with immigrant groups, and therefore
immigrant advocacy groups, mutual assistance organizations.
HealthFinders
Collaborative, Inc --a county wide initiative (NGO) to provide primary
comprehensive medical care to the uninsured --is just beginning. We
will work to increase its reach and effectiveness.
