PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Yes.
We are seeing more individuals and companies using mediation and
other alternative forms of conflict resolution to settle disputes.
Additionally, we are seeing more organizations and educational
institutions interested in learning skills in alternative methods of
conflict resolution.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
hardest obstacle to overcome is the individual's attachment to being
right. Many people see compromise as weakness and winning as the
most important goal. Often collaboration is superficial leaving
underlying issues that feed polarization unaddressed.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
We
are helping to sponsor the Quad State Fair Housing and Equal
Opportunity Conference in Charlotte, NC by providing two days of
conflict resolution training for attendees. The theme of the
conference is "Valuing Diversity in the 21st Century: Practice,
Policy, and Partnerships".
We participated in a Human Rights event whose topic was the Prison Industrialization Complex.
We
have also volunteered our time as facilitators for events being planned
in the area to bring parties with polarized views together for
conversations.
We are in the process of developing a newspaper
column that we hope to syndicate which will explain how alternative
methods of conflict resolution have been used successfully in a variety
of disputes.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
To encourage use of mediation and other alternative methods of conflict resolution to settle disputes.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
We
are the North Carolina Chapter of the Association for Conflict
Resolution which is an international organization. We also have
partnered with the Mediation Network of North Carolina, the North
Carolina Association of Professional Family Mediators, the NC Dispute
Resolution Commission, and the Dispute Resolution Section of the North
Carolina Bar for meetings and trainings.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
To continue reaching out to other organizations and individuals to build diversity within our organization.
To look for opportunities for building Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) programs.
