PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
We
have seen reasonable progress since 2001 which is reflected in a number
of new activities and organisations involved. Of particular importance
is the involvement of Voluntary organisations, Welfare Associations,
Youth Clubs and student unions in colleges and universities. We are
trying to keep track of the type of actions. We are mainly working on
community based peace and non violence activities where the true spirit
is to be seen in the improved relations.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
main obstacles that we have faced and are facing are: 1. Lack of
coordination among all institutions and actors involved. 2. Lack of
community involvement 3. Difficulties in partnership building. We need
to develop a sense of common project. 4. Lack of resources. We have
difficulties in fundraising for our campaigns. 5. Lack of planning and
measurable goals.

ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
At
the International level, we have been working with many networks,
organisations, associations and clubs that are active in
promoting a culture of universal peace and brotherhood.
These networks are action-based and encourage the sharing of
knowledge, skills and experiences to promote active non-violence as an
effective approach in building a Culture of Peace through the use of
human inputs along with information and communication technologies.
These technologies are enhancing the networks’ capabilities in
empowering the organisations for creating better partnerships and to
work more closely with organisations like the UN, the Media and
the governments in order to develop actions in the context of the
2001-2010 International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence
for the Children of the World. Every year IFHD regularly observes the
United Nations International Day of Tolerance on 16th November and
promotes Peace and Tolerance in schools and with teachers. Activities
of the network includes 1) The development of multi-lingual literature
like "New Trends in Voluntary Services"(English & Spanish), "Some
Reflections on Tolerance"(English), "Sustainable Development Utopia or
Reality" (English & French), "Flat Culture"(English), "How to Fight
Corruption & Injustice"(English) and other related useful toolkits.
2) Practical ideas on how to plan, evaluate and implement on-line
information sharing, seminars, youth gatherings, residential camps,
awareness programmes on child exploitation, youth training sessions,
forming youth brigades and fundraising for the network activities. The
workshops promote various themes like Culture of Peace, key actors in
Peace-building, peace education, alternatives to violence in handling
the situations, get to know IT background information on Peace and
other useful information. 3) Development of a webpage at SAARC
level where young people can discuss, get informed and submit their
projects into a Project Bank. 4) Publishing of Monthly, Quarterly, Half
Yearly and Annual Reports. 5) "Flat Culture" is another programme that
promotes peaceful, harmonious and interdependent atmosphere among the
people living together as a community in an apartment-building, from
various different backgrounds at the grass root level. The main
objective being collecting as many youth peace actions as possible.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Peoples’
confidence and trust in the UN as a universal and democratic body
should be encouraged by making the UN truly representative of the
multipolarity available in the world. Peoples impressions that the UN
is dominated by the interests of some politically and militarily
dominant powers should be dispelled. To resolve potential conflicts,
the UN must be armed to act quickly with police and soldiers. Its
economic and social action wings should be strengthened. In other
words, the UN must transform itself so as to appear not as a gathering
of state governments but as a gathering of people interested in peace
and development.
|

networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
