PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Yes!
Participating organizations are increasing and strengthening
their work for peace. We see the change both within the
organization, in the participating individuals, and in their
relationships with third-party individuals and organizations.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Funding always presents a challenge, especially for a project that stretches from Chiapas, Mexico to Panama.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
The
Culture, Spirituality, and Theology of Peace project has used a variety
of workshops, training institutes, and encounters in order to organize
and teach peacemakers at the local level in Mesoamerica.
Beginning in the fall of 2002, individuals in each of the
participating countries now have the basic skills to organize workshops
and other activities independently.
The project works by
strengthening the values and principals necessary for organizations to
effectively work for peace. When firmly rooted in the culture,
spirituality, or theology that inspires them, their activities have
stronger local participation and a long-lasting impact at the community
level.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Our
experience has demonstrated that a Culture of Peace becomes meaningful
when reinforced from the grassroots, rather than through traditional,
top-down methods. The CSTP project has begun demonstrating
success in this regard, so that the local population has the skills,
organization, and firm grounding in values and principles necessary to
have a lasting impact.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
