Enda
Europe, based in Paris, has launched in 1997 a Mediterranean Programme
to promote sustainable development (SD) in this eco-region through a
critical follow up of the implementation of SD policies in the Maghreb
countries.
In 2004, Enda Europe :
• has continued being active in: o
the Comité de suivi des ONG d'environnement de la Méditerranée (CdS)
together with Enda Maghreb, WWF, the Arab Network for Environment and
Development, Friends of the Earth… The CdS is the EU’s interlocutor on
the environmental aspects of the Euromed partnership. o the Euromed
Platform, i.e. the Mediterranean civil society organisations network
which organises the annual Civil Forums taking place in parallel to the
conferences of the Euromed ministers of foreign affairs. • helped putting into place Local 21 Agendas in Algeria and Morocco, with the French Comité 21; •
carried on its work with the Plan Bleu - a French association which
works under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP) - and contributed to the elaboration of indicators of
sustainability of the coastal areas around Alger; • animated
(lessons learned and best practices) 14 French and Moroccan NGOs that
have 7 projects promoting democratic participation at local level of
all citizens (especially vulnerable groups: poor farmers, women, and
disabled people) in various rural and urban areas of Morocco. •
organised, together with 2 Moroccan migrants associations based in
France, a “Solidarity Week with Morocco” from November 19th to 21st of
2004 in Paris (conferences, roundtables, stands…)
In Morocco, Enda Maghreb’s main activities in 2004 have been:
• Environmental education Morocco
is particularly affected by environmental degradation (desertification,
loss of biodiversity, bad management of waste…). Examples of
actions undertaken by Enda Maghreb: capacity building on environmental
education for school teachers and civil society leaders, creation of
environment clubs in 8 schools, creation of green spaces in towns,
Solid Waste Management, preservation of natural resources (Moulouya
river basin), diffusion of environmental education material such as
posters, T-Shirts, colouring books for children, especially during the
“Arab Environment Day” on October, 14th 2004.
• Fight against poverty Besides
sensitization and environmental education, Enda saw that sustainable
management of natural resources in rural areas is only possible if
accompanied by actions to reduce poverty and human pressure on the
environment. Enda Maghreb therefore supports economic activities
(honey, argan oil, aromatic and medicinal plants, woodcraft) undertaken
by rural women.
• Strengthening civil society -
Strengthening the capacities of Moroccan civil society through a better
access to information (e.g. animation of a national network on
desertification, website, repertory of Moroccan NGOs, workshops…) -
Capacity building of vulnerable groups (women and young people) in
cities, for instance through equipment of associations with NTIC. - Access to basic social services: e.g. slum rehabilitation in Salé (suburb of Rabat).
Through
its development programme "RENFCAP", Enda is strenghtening the
capacities of civil society and local authorities in Morocco to improve
mutual understanding and dialogue on a local level (here, in the town
of Oulmès).

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
Enda Europe :
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
The challenges ahead:
• Continuing to build capacities of civil society organisations and local authorities (growing demand); •
In Morocco, continuing to inform about the changes in local democracy
(New Communal Charter promulgated in 2002 which, if well implemented,
would encourage good governance, partnerships between civil society and
local authorities and thus more citizen participation in local
decisions).
