PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Yes,
the issue of sports, development and peace has received attention
through the Olympic Games and initiatives such as the Goodwill Games.
The
Olympic Truce has worked at times, but would be more effective if it
were made known in other ways, such as by bringing it to issues like
domestic violence.
One indicator is the presence of sports focal
points within the UN system are now flourishing, with UNEP, UNICEF and
UNESCO having established them.
The Office of the Secial
Representative on Sports, Development and Peace now has a UN
representative, Djabril Diallo, and we look forward to working with him.
The establishment of a CONGO NGO Committee also serves as an organizational indicator.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Obstacles can be the preservation of one's own organizational or personal turf.

in the near future.
Other work is being planned with Permanent Missions of the UN system on the International Year of Sports and Physical Education.
The
Committee is also investigating ways of linking the Culture of Peace
with post-conflict restorative justice and looking at ways in which to
involve the World Olympians Association in partnership activities at
the United Nations.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |

a Peacebuilding Commission after encouraging NGOs and networks such as
the NGO Committee on the UN and Sports, together with the New York
representative of Adolf Ogi (Special Representative of the
Secretary-General on Sports, Development and Peace), to offer input.
Include
athletes and representatives of National Olympic Committees, especially
in Africa, to serve in the Support Secretariat of such a Commission.
Encourage
the Olympic Truce Foundation to include at least one representative
from NGOs at UN Headquarters to serve in an advisory capacity as an

future Informal Interactive consultations held by the Deptuy
