PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
There
has been some progress in the sense that youth are now being seen as
part of the solution instead of being part of the problem. The
international arena is starting to give due attention to such youth
that work hard in solving problems of lack of peace and insecurity.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Obstacles
occured were not obstacles on the ground but trying to reach to other
youth in the region. NUEYS tried to meet with Ethiopian youth to talk
about the conflict between the two countries but the extended
invitation was rejected by the government of Ethiopia. NUEYS is also
making an effort to reach out to other African youth but this isn't
easy as it is hard to get in contact with them (lack of resources and
network).
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
NUEYS
was able to conduct many seminars on Youth and Ethics(8) , Youth-Law
and Crime (43), Religious Extremism (75), and Psychological Warfare
(37). By also recognizing the importance of environment protection to
achieving peace and security (natural resources are often the cause for
conflics), NUEYS has conducted 124 campaigns for tree planting.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Put
more effort to networking the efforts of youth who promote peace. There
are many organizations that work on peace building and others are
forming and establishing themselves. We need a single organ that can
network all of these efforts. This single organ should also work to
empower the youth organizations through toolkits, seminars, and
training. It would also be of a great advantage if such youth were able
to meet together through a conference or workshop.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
UNOY Peace Builders Africa Network World Federation of Democratic Youth International Union of Socialist Youth
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
Conduct a regional seminar on peace culture in the Horn of Africa
