PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
We
have not developed any indicators to measure achieved progress toward a
culture of peace and nonviolence because of very serious financial
limitations. Otherwise in domain of action our organization has made a
lot of progress.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
most important and serious obstacles we face in our organization are
very serious socio-economic difficulties. We do not have stable source
of funding from external donors, our government or local donor
communities. We depend on donations from well wishers and members of
our organization. These donations create very low and partly
unrecognized impact.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Our
organization has undertaken several actions to reduce unemployment,
drug abuse, HIV/AIDS epidemic and to create and enlarge recreational
facilities. Among the positive actions we have taken in our
organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence are
conduction of cultural, educational and social exchange programs with
volunteers from our organization within Africa, Asia, Europe and
Australia. Between the period of 2001-2005 we have managed to bring
youth from these continents together. We have used our local
available resources to set up a Resource Training and Development
Center for youth in our community in Shikunga, one of our villages. We
have set up a guesthouse to receive and accommodate volunteers from
different parts of the world. Our organization has been trying to fight
social injustices by sponsoring very poor youth who are orphans and
those from abject poverty to join various learning institutions in our
country and aboard. As per now we have five youths from our
organization who are in Manila, Phillipines, undertaking various
courses in two universities. We have some in primary, pre-primary,
secondary schools and vocational training in our country. We have
organized medical camps in collaboration with doctors from USA. Most of
our youth benefited. We organized book donations to various schools
where more than 1500 youths, orphans and those from abject poverty
benefited. We have managed to initiate income-generating projects on
small scale. In the years 2001-2005 we have been able to organize
and celebrate international day of peace, September 21st. These
celebrations took place in Bungoma, Kakamega and Shikunga (Kenya), then
in Kampala (Uganda), Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania). One the old slave trade
market in Zanzibar some of our members have prayed for reconciliation
and forgiveness from the spirits of our forefathers who were sold as
slaves. Some of these celebrations had representatives from the
headquarter of Global Cooperation Society International, Seol (South
Korea). One of the delegates displayed artwork that had peace and
nonviolence messages. Our organization has been involved in
providing civil education to create awareness concerning what the youth
should expect from their leaders, how they can approach their leaders
without confrontation and violence. In some areas they have achieved
their demands and requests and in some areas pressure is still on.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
Our
organization participates in partnerships and networks of International
Volunteers Initiatives Efforts, Global Cooperation Scociety
International, African Voluteer Service and East African Workcamp
Association.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
Our
organization has planned to promote Eco-Tourism and improve and equip
our Ressource Center properly: We plan to set up a library and museum
for the community youth in Shikunga (Kenya). Apart from that we would
like to promote cultural, educational and social exchange programmes in
Africa and abroad, especially by providing more expanded opportunities
to receive volunteers, organize seminars/workshops and properly
publicize international day of peace, September 21st.
