PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
There
has been progress in our organization and mainly in our Constituency
(the Catholic Church of Eastern Africa) regarding the Culture of peace
and nonviolence. The indicators to measure progress have been the
number of requests received at our office from the National and
Diocesan Justice and Peace Offices in the Eastern Africa Region. Another measure is the interest shown in the kit for formation and Peace Education. The demand is growing every month. The
interest to fight the proliferation of small arms is another measure of
the interest in the Culture of Peace. More groups are asking for ways
of combatting this proliferation of weapons. Efforts are being done to prevent children from playing with toy weapons.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The situation of war in many regions. The difficulty to forgive and to live reconciliation when the psychological wounds are strong. The "hate" developed between ethnic groups. The
lack of political will in some governments, local administrators and
chiefs to build peace and to create an atmosphere of reconciliation.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Peace Education in slums. Peace Education in churches. Preaching on Peace and reconciliation. Developing simple methods of reconciliation for small christian communities.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
|

global movement for a culture of peace? |
