PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
We have achieved much for the very short time, Since last year through our programs in schools Mostly public. This has been by offering capacity strengthening / employment, behavior changes & conflict resolution, counseling to drug addicts which has been a great challenge to our youths.
We have also engaged schools, community and public at large for greater participation in culture of peace and non violence. Having recognized that peace starts in within individual, we have mobilized same youth groups and among them two are very active, after same seminars with them. They are now a great challenge to us because they have come up with their own ways of approaching this issue.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Financial constraints: We have not been funded since 2003 up to date. We are using our own money & most of us
we are not employed. This has been through our own contribution
and mainly become we are not political. Deep rooted traditions:
The areas we are implementing our programs are really rooted on
traditions same are very weird. They believe that all kinds of
cattle are theirs & this has affected the surrounding communities.
They also believe that they have a right to graze anywhere. They
value cattle more than human being, ladies are assets, girls are paid
while in lower primary, ladies have no rights young person has no say
in the community & they are so united such that to break their
culture is not easy, land clashes every now & then, right now they
are still fighting & killing people of the surrounding tribes.
To persuade the area leaders has been very hard for us mainly
because we are young and we are not supposed to talk before the old.
The practice of FGM to our young girl and we really need our
young ladies enjoy their freedom.

ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
We have conducted a number of activities and in all activities
the word peace could not depart from our representations. We have
visited five public secondary schools and two primary schools between
last year mid and this year. The issues have been HIV/AIDS, drugs and substance and conflict resolution. All have been successful, the feedback has been quite good, because individual youths, same referred by their schools have come for counseling mostly those who were or have been suspended due to misconducts. We also had environmental clean up and tree planting by youths in & out of school. All these helps us in pursuit of our vision of having a health, fulfilling & confident future. We have trained four youth groups for six months on issues
pertaining HIV/AIDS, drugs & substances abuse, behavioral changes
conflict resolution. This groups are now training the community
on the same . We have also been meeting in our office at least once
monthly. 18th/03/05 we had an ant demonstration meeting with all those
groups we network with to stop same demonstration that had been planed
by same groups before having dialogue. We are not against
demonstration but to us there is a process. These looked like
revenge & the worst could be expected, so we tried to stop & it
was successful and all those problem we tackled through dialogue with
the C.A.C.C (constituency Aids Control Council). Most of this demonstration turns to be destructive.
