PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade?

* A-Regarding the first activity, the annual growth in information resources is quite evident;    information resources have amounted to 552,000 titles in 1,218,000 volumes.  To date the library (and its branch in al-Murabba') received two million visitors

* B-Concerning the cultural and information services, there has always been a diversity of activities in the library around the year.

* C- We have launched an ambitious programme for translation and scientific publishing, that has now reached its zenith as we are in the process of publishing an encyclopedia of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that lies in 13 volumes.

Measures of success:
* The usage rate of the information resources inside the library.
* The usage rate of information resources outside the library.
* The annual rate of library visitors.
* The number of participants taking part in cultural activities.
* The demand rate for the scientific publications issued by the library.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?

* During the early years of the library’s history, the main challenges and obstacles were the lack of efficient workforce specialized in library and information areas

* At a certain time, the library’s budget was not sufficient to carry out the planned enterprises and activities, or to meet the challenges as to library, documentation and information services

* The citizens were not fully aware of the services and activities offered by the library. Their participation in such services and activities was, therefore, poor during the early years, especially in reading and documentation activities.

ACTIONS: What actions have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?

* Production of a TV programme (Cultural Reviews) that deals with contemporary cultural and intellectual issues and visions
* The Unified Arab Library Catalogue, a project aiming to establish a giant Arab bibliographical database according to international standards. The project is currently being prepared so as to be beneficial to Arab and foreign libraries all over the world

* Acquisition and processing of a vast array of rare information resources (over 80,000 in number) including books, manuscripts, photographs, coins and maps.

* Participation in the International Frankfurt Book Fair through the Saudi pavilion where 41 national institutions took part. The exquisitely designed Saudi pavilion displayed the intellectual heritage of the Saudi Kingdom, and the participation of King Abdul Aziz Public Library in that exhibition was by all means remarkable.

* Establishing the Children’s Book Club which creates a kind of connection between children and libraries, and helps them have their own private libraries by providing children with the appropriate books and encouraging them to join the most suitable activities.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade?

PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

There is a wide range of correspondence between the library and many Arab countries in the Gulf, the Middle East and the Arab Maghreb.

Outside the Arab countries, the library is corresponding with countries such as Britain, France, Germany and the USA.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)?
