PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Our
organization has experienced a more profound interest in working for
and with children in the domain of sustainable development. We see this
first and foremost in more encounters between children from different
countries through various conferences and trios, and in UNEPs
emphasis on targeting younger children.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Recurrent
wars and social strife in several countries. The rise of fundementalism
in the Middle East, and also the violent response of the West.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Our
organization has initiated cooperation with an organization working
with children in Sri Lanka. Here we jointly educate what we call
Environmental Detectives. One of their main tasks is to take care of
forests and water sheds, thus promoting UN Millenium Goal nr. 7,
concerning clean drinking water.
We have also promoted the
celebration of June the 5th, as World Environmental Day, a different
approach to peace, underlining our common resource base as a way
towards better understanding.

|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Help exchange visits between children of different cultures and regions - promote penfriends world wide.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
The UNEP and Future in Our Hands Sri Lanka.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
We
will continue our project work in Sri Lanka, and will hopefully
continue our links with UNEP. Likewise, if money permits, we would like
to promote our concept of Green Childrens' Cities, as a way of
promoting participation from children.
