PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
The
organization has seen improvement in relation to freedom of expression
and association since the advert of the present political dispensation. The organization has also witnessed the cease less campaign against the culture of corruption by the Obasanjo administration

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Absence of support for community development projects by the organized private sector and government. Another militating factor against the culture of peace is lack of enabling environment for creativity and industry.

ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
ACTIONS The
organization visited places and structures that are destroyed by the
ethno-religious crises that engulf the neighbouring Langtang and Wase
local governments of Plateau state. The organization sponsored a peace rally and football match to promote peace and tolerance in Jos and its environment.
The
organization paid a solidarity visit to the minister of state
(transport) Engr. Musa Azi to intimate him about the pressing and
developmental needs of the citizenry.
The organization published
editorial articles on topical issues in the Nigeria newspapers
highlighting the essential scenarios which are germane to nation a
building.
The Unified tribe of Plateau association paid a
soldiery visit to the state government on the occasion of his return to
office after the state emergency in Plateau state.
In the same
vein, the organization advised the government to continually convene
and sponsor seminars and workshops for stake holders of the polity in
respect of peace building initiatives.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
The
United Nations should provide funds for peace educators. And the UN
should encourage educational programme particularly for rural dwellers. The
United Nations should support Nigeria in her campaign for economic and
constitutional reforms. The United Nations should plead with the London
and Paris club to reduce Nigeria’s debt overhang. The United Nations should fund peace clubs in secondary schools and tertiary institutions of learning. The United Nations should empower the civil society organizations to monitor political elections.

PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
The organization is in partnership with Relief network project and international centre for peace, charities and development.

PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
The organization will support micro-credit scheme to alleviate to poverty in communities of the nation.
The organization will provide a subsidized transportation scheme for rural dwellers. The organization will promote HIV awareness programmes.
The organization will establish peace clubs in primary, secondary and tertiary institution of learning.
The organization will sponsor radio and television programmes on peace building initiatives. The
organization will visit a number of personalities that distinguish
themselves as advocates and ambassadors of peace in Nigeria. These
individuals include Rtd Gen Abdulsalam Abubakar, chairman UN reforms
committee (Nigeria) chief Emeka Anyaoku, secretary UN reforms committee
(Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Vice president Federal republic of
Nigeria, chief Samuel Adediji Adedoyin, Chief Rochas Okorocha, Rtd
General Ibrahim Badamasi Babagida, Rtd General Yakubu Gowon and the
Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Victor Pam). These events will take place during the
celebration of internal day of peace (2005).
The organization
will establish an agricultural scheme for rural youth and rural
dwellers whereby farming will be encourage in the same vein, the
organization will collaborate with specialised agricultural agencies in
United states of America, Malaysia and Israel.
This idea will
facilitate the establishment of agricultural research centre in Plateau
and other parts of the country. And we will organise agricultural shows
to showcase the out put of this idea of the society. Furthermore, the
organization will establish a youth centre which encompasses indoor
games and talent development centre which will encourage and support
artists writers, craftsmen and models.
