PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Niger
Delta region our primary constituency in Nigeria noted for violence and
youth restiveness is gradually returning to peace and relative
calmness, thus providing an enabling envirounment for crude oil
exploitatin and intra/ inter community peaceful coexistence.
This
was made possible as a result of Afrodep partnersghip with European
commission micro projects programme for sustainable development and
peace initiative in the Niger Delta.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
.Lack of emploable skills for youth.
.Insufficient education and sensitization on culture of peace.
.Negative propaganda from the media.
.Lack of political will by government to prosecute " Secrad cows" who are trouble shooters.
.insufficient funding

ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
-Afrodep
established "community Peace Forum" in 2004. The Community Peace Forum
( C P F ) is a peace initiative aimed at providing an avenue for
interactive at community level for Peace Building / conflict resolution.
-
Afrodep actively participates in Shell Petroleum Dev. Co sponsored "
Conflict Resolution Experts Forum". this is a think Tank group that
profers solution for peaceful co-existence in the Niger Delta.
-
Afrodep's CASCH ( Citizen Action For Social Change) programme advocates
policy changes that will engender and promote peace coexistence, equal
participation in democratization process protection of rights of women,
minority and child etc.

give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |

Focus on stretegies for poverty reduction to enhance economic life of
the vulnerable because poverty is one of the causative agents of
conflict.
. To entrench the culture of Peace education as a national programme among member states

PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
. Shell Petroleum Devpt. -Nigeria, sponsored " Conflict Resolution experts Forum" A network of conflict mamnagement experts.
.
Afrodep partners with European commission (Micro - Projects
Programme MPP3) in the Niger Delta for programmes aimed at reducing
social exclusion, conflict and promoting sustainable community
development.
.New partinership for peace training with Kofi Annan Interntional Peace Keeping and Training Center, Accra / ZIF ( Germany).

PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
.
To strengthen skill Aquisition training programme for youths to help
them acquire employable skills and earn in liveable wages thereby
reduce poverty & conflict.
. Further education / sensitization on cultuer of peace through outreach to media and colleges / university, on campus program.
.To
strengthen policy advocacy and other activities through our CASCH (
citizens action for social change ) programme for peace at
community ( grassroot) level within trouble zones in Nigeria.
