PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Agenda
for Community Development is a community-based organisation established
to promote the understanding and resolution of conflicts among
children and youths through research, training, outreach and practice.
AFCODE's
program give young people the ability to recognize and avoid
potentially dangerous activities such as bullying, cultism, violence
and substance abuse which are believed to play a significant role in
the spread of HIV / AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted infections.
The organisation's programs help young people develop positive
life skills; strengthen self-esteem and a sense of empowerment.
Founded
in 1998 by Olaitan Ibiyemi, Agenda for Community Development various
projects help in promoting United Nations Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs) using creative approaches to address social issues.
Through various approaches such as arts/theatre, formal
workshops, debates, healthy competitions and other reflection
sessions; young people are taught various skills such as
self-esteem, receptivity, communication, decision-making, cohabitation,
conflict analysis, conflict resolution, co-operation, creativity,
critical attitude and social compromise.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?

The major obstacle is finance to enable us carry out all our projects

ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
AFCODE's
program gives youth the ability to recognize and avoid
potentially dangerous situations such as violent conflicts,
bullying, name-calling, substance abuse as well as sexually transmitted
infections (STI's) including HIV/AIDS. Our programs help
young people develop positive life skills; strengthen self-esteem and
give youth a sense of empowerment; utilizing research-based,
multi-session prevention education curricula that adapts to the
changing needs of our community. Through various creative
approaches such as art workshops, theatre workshops, games,
excursions, reflection sessions and debates, exhibitions as well as
other support activities , young people are taught skills to enable
them improve their lives in areas as varied as self-esteem,
receptivity, communication, decision-making, cohabitation, analysis,
conflict resolution and co-operation, creativity, critical attitude and
social compromise.
Peace Works
AFCODE's
target is to develop young people into informed, critically
thinking individuals, tolerant of the views of others and empowered to
deal with conflicts without resorting to the use of violence.
Our
peace program create awareness of the omnipresence of conflict as well
as the attitudes that are associated with it so that young people
in their daily lives, may apply conflict resolution methods such as
negotiation and mediation. Another major component of the
peace work is teaching young ones on strategies to
used in dealing with anger, accepting responsibility and
dealing with blame and the importance of developing helpful ways to
reflect on their emotions, setting goals and acknowledge the
positive consequences of living in a world of peace.
Agenda for
Community Development–AFCODE peace works include but not limited to
peer mediation training and diversity training through
cross cultural events.
AFCODE has since been
pioneering school linkages to enable students to engage in
meaningful educational projects with peers around the globe and
throughout the world.
The organization observes
the Annual International Day for Peace every September 21 and is
involved in the The Peace Pal Project of the World Peace Prayer
Society. The objectives of the Peace Pal Project is to contribute
to the creation of a democratic school environment and a common culture
of tolerance and peaceful resolution of conflict in schools and to
introduce the skills of democracy, tolerance and peace as part of the
participating school curriculum.
Drug Demand Reduction
AFCODE helps mobilize civil society in drug demand reduction
activities, specifically in the areas of alcohol, tobacco, and drug
prevention. The organization enhances, whenever possible, the
United Nations International Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) and
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s leadership activities. The
organization also conduct activities on Tobacco Smoking Prevention
among children, teenagers and adolescents.
Presently Agenda for
Community Development is commissioned by Chemical and Allied
Products Plc (CAP) to undertake Participatory Mural Painting
Project on Drug Abuse Prevention in thirty secondary schools in
Lagos State. The organization also conducts life skill training for
young people.
Agenda for Community Development is an
International Documentation Centre for the US Based Regional Alcohol
and Drug Awareness Resource Network (RADAR). Members of
Agenda for Community Development belong to Globalink (The
International Tobacco Control Network), Global Tobacco Research Network
(GTRN) and International Network of Women Against Tobacco (INWAT),
International Harm Reduction Association and Network of NGO on Drug
Demand Reduction.
