PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Yes, we have seen. More and more people stand up and speak out for another world, where justice reigns.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
most important obstacle is that the day the decade was opening, the
attention of the world was pulled towards a new kind of war, a war
against terrorism. The fear in the world was used to put minds on war,
while we need these minds to prepare the road towards peace. We cannot build a culture of peace and invent a new war in the same time. This obstacle has to be healed.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Since
May 1999, during the Hague Appeal for Peace conference, we conducted a
silent vigil for peace in front of the Peace Palace in The
Hagueregularily. Since 18 september 2001 we do the same, every first
thursday of the month: Silence for Peace. Also, since 21 september
2002 we celebrate the International Day of Peace at the square before
the Peace Palace with a day filled with silent meditation, ceremonies,
prayer, meditation, music and last year we were allowed to burn a
ceremonial fire all day. We stand in front of the seat if the
International Court of Justice, well aware that the world needs good
functioning organs of international justice to establisch a worldwide
culture of peace, in wich conflicts are solved non violent. We
bundle our energies and dedicate it to the creation of a culture of
peace, knowing ourselves connected with all those who commemorate the
day also, inviting everybody to join.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
The
culture of peace actionplan needs to become the utmost priority in all
the levels and actions from the UN, it's member states and the world at
large. This needs an openly proclaimed, promoted and lived up to
decission to give it this status and attention by the United Nations,
not as one of the many decades, but as the decade that embraces all
others; the primary focus. Maybe even the uniting for peace act should be activated for it, because world peace and life on earth ARE at stake.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
entering workinggroups and meetings to promote the decade and help remember that the earth is at stake here. Dutch Platform for a Culture of Peace, NEAG, IDA/Cefluris, Campagne against weapontrade
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
To go on with the vigil; take the celebration on 21st of september to a 24 hour event. Help connecting the peaceworkers into one family, working together. Stand
up and speak out at the entrance of weapontrade events, to give voice
to the invitation to transform the creation of war into the creation of
peace.
Spread the word about the distribution of the hoeopathic
medicine that is derived from the roots of the Diospyros Kaki tree that
grows in Nagasaki, close to where the epicentre of the plutoniiumbomb
was, and invite people to join the Kaki tree project and plant trees of
peace all over the world: info: http://www6.plala.or.jp/kaki-project/
