PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Pro
Dialog celebrates its 10th anniversary after 10 years of working on the
improvement of intercultural communication. Since the beginning of 1995
Pro Dialog developed and led 250 trainings and further education
programmes for professionals and young people youth and 160 days
of training for craftsmens’ instructors in of the skilled trades'
technical workshops. About 4.000 participants took part in these
trainings which took place all over Germany. The basis of this work
is the idea that a constructive dealing with conflicts in the
intercultural context is essential for living together in a peaceful
way. By providing training in this field, we hope to have contributed
to this goal by helping people to gain competence and to build up
networks of support for their daily work for their intercultural
context in a society in which migration is an important fact.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Sometimes
it is difficult if participants do not come to our trainig by their own
will, but have been ordered to particpate by superiors - then we have
to do motivation work, first. Sometimes lack of funds is what makes it difficult to work. Sometimes, there are not enough trainers with a migration background and adequate training to help us. Since
September 11, 2001, sometimes we face a certain hostility and fear
against people with Muslim belief, reducing the willingness to
cooperate.
|

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Please,
be aware of conflict and tension that arises when ideological/
religious beliefs stand against each other, particularely when one or
several say that they are better/ more valuable than others. We are
right now especilly scared at the tension between the people of
Christian and Muslim belief, which we observe in the International
political scene as well as in our migration society here in Germany. We
hope to make a good contribution by doing our work of eduation and
training, but we feel that much more must be done, also on the level of
high ranking religious and political leaders to prevent further
escalation and transform the fear and hostility that there is in a
dialogue focused on mutual respect for the diversity, also for
religous/ideologic beliefs.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
With diverse educational institutes, church organisations, welfare organisations, etc.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
Future perspectives Pro
Dialog will continue supporting a constructive dealing with conflicts
and diversity in the intercultural context because we believe that it
is important not only for individuals living or working together
with people with different cultural, ethnical or social backgrounds but also for a common future in the global context.
That is why we go on offering trainings and workshops to give information and practical tools for dealing with: - cultural, religious and educational differences - interreligious education, especially in the Christian-Islamic context - intercultural communication - conflict-management in the intercultural context - a constructive way of managing diversity
We also offer consulting to questions concerning the intercultural context and publish books and pamphlets.
