PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
We
have seen progress (indicated by the increase over ithe last 5 years)
in the number of organizations that have partnered with us in our
activities. For example, our festival series 11 Days of Global Unity
(which culminated on the International Day of Peace Sept. 21, 2004)
involved well over 100 partner organizations with events in over 100
cities (80 countries) worldwide.
For us, this is an indication
that the technology that facilitates networking, along with the desire
for solidarity on a global scale is growing.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
Adequate funding has continued to be our biggest challenge. However, our funding seems to be steadily increasing.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
This
is only a partial listing of We, The World's activities for a Culture
of Peace starting from 2005 and working backwards. For complete

Interdependence Day Sept. 12, 2004 - a major 11 Days event
In
proclaiming Interdependence Day, we are acknowledging that we are all
connected, and that when one thread in the web of life is sundered, all
are diminished. Where equity and mutual respect prevail, all benefit.

In
September 2002 We, The World launched Interdependence Day at the
Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development. In 2004
Interdependence Day activities took place in New York City, Phoenix,
Rome and other areas of the world. This annual festival celebrates the
interconnectedness of all life and the recognition of that
interconnectedness.
The 2004 NY Interdependence Day Festival

keynote speaker Robert Knight (WBAI/Pacifica Radio News Analyst and
Host of Earth Watch), Amnesty International, Brooklyn Womens Chorus,

STUDENT-UN VIDEOCONFERENCE SERIES: Building Peace and Security in the 21st Century Linking the U.N. with Schools and Featured Participants from Around the World Presented by We, The World in Association with The United Nations Department of Public Information
Each
event of this Videoconference Series launched in July 2003 links
schools, the United Nations and featured speakers including Dr. Jane
Goodall, Congressman Dennis Kucinich and many others. Information is
disseminated and discussed about conflict prevention through creating
peaceful, sustainable societies. We, The World has already convened 3
excellent videoconferences, each involving hundreds of students,
faculty and others (close to 1,000 total). Students and others interact
with speakers and are encouraged to create a dream and vision of peace,
and then put their dream into action. Students come away informed,
inspired and motivated to participate in many different kinds of peace
activities.
Exposure through the media has already multiplied
the outreach of our videoconferences to tens of thousands or more!
Education Update (a newspaper that reaches 200,000 parents, educators,
and students) has made our Sept. videoconference the Cover Story of
their 8th Anniversary issue! Utne Magazine website ran a feature story
at the start of the series entitled "All About Solutions" Also excerpts
from the first videoconference were broadcast on the INN Report with a
viewership of tens of thousands of people via the Dish Network.
ART FOR CHILDREN'S SAKE "The world's children would sing to you had they a voice." - Paul Weingarten.

THE GANDHI-KING SEASON FOR NONVIOLENCE AT THE UNITED NATIONS (Co-Sponsored by We, The World)
The
Gandhi-King Season for Nonviolence covers the period between the
memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. January 30th through April 4th. It is an international,
educational, media and grassroots campaign dedicated to promoting
nonviolence as a powerful way to heal, transform and empower our lives
and our communities. Launched in 1998, it strives to honor the vision
of these great peacemakers through action and education.
On
January 30, 2003 over 700 High School children took part in this
inspirational event in which young people learned about the connection
between nonviolence and health, and about the legacies of Mahatma
Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Students were provided
opportunities to create or participate in nonviolence programs,
workshops, media and arts production and other activities in their
schools. The closing event on April 4th was also Co-Sponsored by We,
The World.

COMMUNITY FORUM ON 9/11 AT CITY HALL IN NEW YORK CITY
On

Hall that was convened by The Foundation for Ethics and Meaning. It was
chaired by New York City Council Member Alan Gerson of the City's First
Council District (where the World Trade Center site is). The Forum was
successful in encouraging community dialogue and connection regarding
9/11 and the local, national and international events that followed.
TURNING POINT PROJECT We,
The World was a co-sponsor of two of an unprecedented series of 25
full-page New York Times ads from 1999 to 2000 by the Turning Point
Project that brought many of the problems associated with corporate
globalization to the public's attention.
OCTOBER 8TH 2001 TEACH-IN/SPEAK-OUT: PEACE IN THE 21ST CENTURY: AN IMPERATIVE FOR SURVIVAL In
response to the September 11th tragedy We, The World sponsored this
historic event which featured speakers and views that the major media
largely chose not to air. One day after the start of the bombing of
Afghanistan participants heard the moving and informative words of
Daniel Ellsberg, Jane Goodall, Robert Thurman, Amy Goodman, Richard
Falk, Alice Slater, Robert Jay Lifton, Reverend Billy, and many others
in an open dialogue about what led to this crisis, alternatives to war
and ways forward that emphasize prevention (i.e. ending the conditions
that give rise to hatred and terrorism) rather than crisis management
(i.e. violent/military actions).

of 800,000 people! Co-sponsoring organizations included: USA, Unitarian
Universalist Community Church of New York, The Foundation for Ethics

ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
I
suggest that NGOs and civil Society be given decision-making
capabilities as part of a checks and balances system similar to the
United States Congress.

PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
The Global Resources Network Connecting caring organizations globally so that a breakthrough anywhere can be a breakthrough everywhere!
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Overview:
This breakthrough model of collaboration and mutual support will allow
1,000s of socially conscious organizations and individuals to
effectively work together to create a world where people live in
harmony with each other and with the rest of nature. At a time when
there is so much suffering in the world, and the obstacles to peace and
sustainability are so great, the Global Resources Network (GRN) will
provide the resources and interconnectivity to facilitate local,
regional and international civil society education, collaboration and
organizing.
The GRN will accelerate the formation of a powerful
international movement of concerned and informed people that generates
political will and the enlightened consumer power needed to create a
world that truly works for all!
In creating the GRN we will
utilize our already-established extensive network of over 10,000 groups
and individuals around the world plus our working relationships with
hundreds of visionary leaders (such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu) and
major organizations that include Amnesty International and the Jane
Goodall Institute.
Imagine the tremendous social, economic, and
political power of 1000s of organizations representing millions of
people sharing resources, cross promoting their endeavors and
participating in periodic mass events taking place simultaneously
around the world!
Purpose: We are developing the Global
Resources Network as a comprehensive, collaborative, worldwide
communications and organizing network with innovative web-based
technological resources. We envision this as a tool to:
1) significantly improve the effectiveness and visibility of civil
society organizations and socially conscious businesses worldwide,
2) organize large-scale Public International Events that engage,
inform and involve a global audience. 11 Days of Global Unity in Sept.
