1. International Symposium for Promoting a Culture of Peace and Sustainability in Asia and the Pacific
The
current ethnic, cultural, religious conflicts in Asian-Pacific region
are significant components of conflicting areas worldwide. Thus,
enhancing the culture of peace is a momentous assignment and directly
connected to national and global security. Without implementation of
peace in this area, sustainable development is out of reach.
APCEIU,
through years of international symposiums and workshops on
international human rights and sustainable development, has been
improving interest in Education for International Understanding (EIU)
and confirming networks with related institutions to settle the culture
of peace. Now approaching the 5th anniversary of APCEIU and renewal of
the agreement between the Korean government and UNESCO, new strategies
are needed to promote EIU. Therefore, an international symposium is
designed to examine challenges and tasks, discuss main issues and
identify effective strategies to promote EIU.
Main Contents ·Discussion on the key issues and tasks of EIU in the Asia-Pacific region ·Sharing of best models for EIU in the region and identification of ways to strengthen cooperation among EIU partners ·Establishment of a strategy for a medium and long-term development of APCEIU
2. Dissemination of Information on EIU
APCEIU
has promoted EIU in the region through its two periodical publications,
SangSaeng, a quarterly EIU magazine in the English language, and
Education for International Understanding (EIU), a journal in the
Korean language. The two publications introduce diverse efforts
in EIU and serve as a forum for dialogue and exchange of ideas on key
issues, methods and experiences of EIU among educators, teachers and
students, and civil society leaders, in the Asia-Pacific and other
regions. By doing so, they have played a key role in providing
key EIU stakeholders in the region with valuable information and
resources on EIU, and contributed to a more systematic development of
EIU in the Asia-Pacific region including Korea.
APCEIU will continue to promote networking among EIU/peace educators, for mutual strengthening of capacities and effects.
3. Development of EIU Resource Materials
Various
forms of study materials need to be consistently developed and
distributed in order to further promote EIU in the Asia-Pacific region.
For the past 4 years, APCEIU has steadily met the demands for teaching
and learning materials on EIU within Korea, but nevertheless lacked
sufficient development of materials for the entire Asia-Pacific region.
Each
country in the Asia-Pacific region has its own different reasons to
emphasize EIU according to circumstances, and thus the contents and
direction of EIU as well as the level of implementation also differ.
APCEIU aims to develop and distribute regional teaching and learning
materials on EIU that meet the realities and actual needs of the
Asia-Pacific region, by extensively gathering the latest EIU-related
data and researching EIU programmes currently being run in the region.
In
addition, in order to promote EIU and appeal to educational
institutions within Korea, APCEIU will develop and distribute various
new types of materials that could not only be utilized at the
discretion of the teachers but also be integrated into a range of
existing school subjects.
Main Activities ·Development of “EIU through Food” (Korean) ·Development of “Theories and Realities of EIU”(English)
4. Study of Religious-Cultural Conflict and Peace in Asia-Pacific Conflict Area
Based
on the evaluation following several international symposiums that it is
impossible to settle the dispute in the Asia-Pacific region without
understanding the reasons and the process of conflicts, the APCEIU has
conducted researches into the conflicts in the troubled for 2 years
from August, 2002 and the findings were reported by January, 2005.
APCEIU
will publish the findings of the study and do publicity work to help
educators and activists who work in schools and civil societies to make
a contribution to conflict studies in the Asia-Pacific area and the
establishment of the culture of peace in the region.
Main Contents - Research Areas: Kashmir, Indonesia, Philippine, Sri Lanka, East Timor - Participants: 8 researchers of the Area Study Team - Publication of findings of the research study on the conflict area - Meetings for the publicity activities on-line data distribution of the research
5. Asia-Pacific workshop for Teacher training
Education
for International Understanding encompasses many areas and subjects
such as human rights, peace, globalization, sustainable development,
and intercultural understanding. Thus the subjects or ways of
approaching EIU should be specific depending on local or national or
sub-regional context of the Asia Pacific region or target groups. In
addition, there is a growing need to build teachers’ capacity for
Education for International Understanding, so that they can become
experts or focal points in the local, national, sub-regional context
and ultimately at the regional level.
As a key dimension of
its mission, APCEIU has organized and conducted training workshops for
teachers and teacher educators from countries in the Asia-Pacific
region since 2001. The Teacher Training Course seeks to provide
Asia-Pacific teachers, teacher educators and other tertiary level
educators with a critical conceptual understanding as well as practical
teaching-learning activities of EIU towards a culture of peace. For
this purpose, APCEIU is organizing its 5th regional teacher-training
workshop to develop a model of teacher training workshop that is
applicable and could multiply in Asia Pacific region.

1. Development of Model Peace Classroom
The
Asia-Pacific region has great potentials to develop and enlarge
Education for International Understanding. However, there are still
many barriers to promote EIU in the current school environment or in
the educational setting in this region. There is an urgent need to
motivate and encourage teachers to practice EIU in their daily school
life and to apply EIU in the classroom.
APCEIU has
continuously endeavored to meet such demand through development of the
curriculum and teaching modules. In line with such continuing
efforts to promote EIU, APCEIU is furthermore trying to develop a model
peace classroom that will be applicable in the Asia-Pacific region,
working closely with EIU experts from the Asia-Pacific region in all
stages of the project from planning to curriculum development and to
implementation of the model peace classroom.
Main Activities · Development of Model Peace Classroom · Training Workshop for Korean Teachers (Experimental Camp for Peace Class Demonstration)
3. Youth Forum for Fostering Peace Messengers
To
foster the young generation to be EIU leaders in the Asia Pacific
region, youth formation should be emphasized. Youth as future
generation have great potentials to spread and to enlarge EIU in the
Asia-Pacific region.
Considering the characteristics and
sensitivities of the youth, the program will be designed to provide the
participants with opportunities for learning by doing and doing by
learning in the field beyond the school class settings, emphasizing
active and participatory educational methods. Integrating youth peace
initiatives in the community in terms of issues such as human rights,
sustainable development, peace, equity and so on, the youth can build
their capacities to learn and understand EIU issues and to find
solutions.
4. EIU Fellowship Programme
To promote
and implement education for international understanding toward a
culture of peace in the Asia-Pacific region, APCEIU has carried out an
annual Teacher Training Workshop on EIU in the Asia-Pacific region in
cooperation with important EIU partners in the region such as
UNESCO-APNIEVE and UNESCO Apia Office. In 2003 and 2004, APCEIU
experimented with a more focused and comprehensive training programme.
The
UNESCO-APCEIU EIU Fellowship Programme is in line with this continuing
effort to bring schoolteachers, teacher educators and administrators
from different countries of the region together for development of the
contents and pedagogy of EIU toward a culture of peace, especially for
development of educational or reading materials for children or youth.
The objectives of the programme are to provide the fellowship
holders with opportunities to build their capacity as specialists in
the themes, methods, and media for EIU and to enhance their networking
at an institutional level so that they can play the role of focal point
to promote EIU in their countries and in sub-regions.
