PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
The
CPAFFC has increased its activities in promoting peace and friendship
among peoples in the world. In the first half of this decade, it has
undertaken many programs to enhance sustainable development and social
equality in China, these have been done through national and
international cooperation. It has established links and strengthened
partnerships with organizations in both developed and developing
countries. Ideas have been shared, consensus has been reached, and
joint efforts have been taken to build a fair, just and peaceful world.
Its activities have been widely recognized and supported by
governments at all levels, organizations, companies, individuals at
home and abroad. As long as we continue to sow seeds of peace in the
hearts of people through more practical programs and call on others to
do so, we will be able to make further progress towards culture of
peace.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
CPAFFC has wide contacts with and support from all walks of life in
China. Since it does not have a representative office in headquarters
of UN, there is a lack of communication channels with UN and other
international NGOs. It is important to have more support and
information from UN. Financial difficulties also exist in carrying out
its many projects.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
The
CPAFFC has erected a Peace Statue at the beginning of the century and a
Peace Bell in 2004 in its compound expressing its wish to build peace
in the world. People from all walks of life and friends from other
countries joined the inauguration ceremonies.
It attaches
great importance to youth programs. Through exchange of visits,
seminars, summer or winter camps, peace camps, we organize young people
from all over the world to get to know each other’s culture, history
and current situation. Friendship and mutual understanding were built
among them. It also organizes children chorus and art troupes to
perform in other countries on the theme of Peace, Love and Friendship.
It
has raised funds from home and abroad for its various programs
concerning poverty eradiation, education, environmental protection,
medical help, etc. These include: training English teachers from poor
areas, providing scholarship for university students from poor
families, donating computers and building computer labs and school
facilities to needy schools, introducing international volunteers to
come to China to teach English or provide medical help, etc., training
laid-off women workers to learn useful skills to help them find jobs,
making material and financial donations to victims in disaster-stricken
areas in China and other parts of the world, organizing medical teams
to poor areas giving local people free medical examination and
treatment, sponsoring disabled children to go to school. There are also
fund especially set up for programs of tree planting, sands control,
and environmental protection conferences. When SARS hit China in 2003,
it helped to ship from western countries hundreds of boxes of purifiers
and donate them to hospitals, schools and offices in China. It
has sponsored many national and international conferences and seminars
to promote cooperation with developed and developing countries. Topics
include finance, economy, trade, investment, enterprise management,
regional development, high technology, agricultural technology,
environmental protection technology, the waste water treatment, the
conversion of military technologies to civilian use, etc.
|
ADVICE: What advice would you like to
give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a
culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade? |
Since
China is the largest developing country in the world, we hope UN could
set up an information center in China. So that Chinese NGOs could have
easy access to and more involvement with UN activities.
|
PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and
networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the
global movement for a culture of peace? |
The
CPAFFC has established relations with over 550 NGOs in about 130
countries in the world. It enjoys special consultative status with
ECOSOC of UN, and associated with UN DPI NGO section, and is a member
of CONGO.
|
PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)? |
