PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade?

BC Peace Ed 2004 brought together some 70 teachers, students, community educators and concerned citizens in October 2004 at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. Some 30 workshops were held, and a commitment made to continue. The planning committee for Peace Ed 2005 has now been formed, and the next conference scheduled for October 20-22, 2005. This year we are co-operating with three units of the BC Teachers' Federation (PAGE: Peace and Global Education; EAR: Educators Against Racism; and ESL - teachers of English as a second language) in sponsoring the conference. Purpose of the conference, which we expect to be annual: to encourage those involved in BC in peace education and global education, acquaint them with resources, and enable them to network. Longterm goal: to work with the eight BC faculties of education to integrate culture-of-peace values in the BC school system, K-12.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?

Lack of funding; the numbing of the population through television; the stresses that BC teachers are under because of government budget cuts; the culture of consumerism that keeps adults working long hours to stay afloat financially, and who therefore have little time or energy for peace and global education

ACTIONS: What actions have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?

(1) we have made a commitment to have an annual peace education conference;
(2) we have begun to work with the Association of BC Deans of Education, in order to develop a systemic approach throughout the province;
(3) we have made a commitment to prepare an offering for the World Peace Forum, to be held in Vancouver in June 2006;
(4) we have undertaken a provincial liaison role with our national counterpart, the CPI (Canadian Peace Initiative).

ADVICE: What advice would you like to give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade?

We encourage the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to resist the pressures of those nations which would direct the resources of the UN away from the development of a Culture of Peace and towards a militaristic or bureaucratic response to the needs of the peoples of the world for food, water, education, medical care and human rights.

PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

We are actively developing a network of teachers and activistis from both the public school system and community organizations. Some of these organizations, following our 2004 conference, began to work together in local areas in the province.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)?

We plan to hold a peace education conference every year until we have peace [ :) ], and to promote local and global projects through synergy among the many organizations that take part in our conferences.
