PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
Since
its foundation, in April 2003, Projeto Casulo has contributed to the
improvement in quality of life for the population of Real Parque and
Jardim Panorama through a community development process that
prioritizes young people as strategic agents of social transformation.
In only two years of activities, it is possible to realize that the
youngsters and, consequently, the community have acquired knowledge
about citizenship and community mobilization. This process contribute
to minimize social differences – afterall, violence is not a public
security question, but a social question.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The
main obstacles are people’s conformism and lack of initiative and the
dificulties to obtain financial support for projects.
|
ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
Projeto
Casulo’s main objective is to promote autonomy and citizenship among
the community through actions in culture and education. In order to
achieve this purpose, Projeto Casulo works with the following
guidelines: Culture (an invaluable means to strengthen young people's
self-reliance and foster constructive and creative processes),
Education (expand young people's personal and educational
background and thus contribute to the development of the skills and
abilities necessary for their inclusion in society), Community Action
(to strengthen local community organizations through actions that could
help attract new members, coach community leaders and agents, and
enable the implementation of projects for the socio-economic
development of that area) and Young Entrepreneurship (to encourage,
train and support young people to start social enterprises and
income-generating enterprises). The main programs developed at Projeto
Casulo are Oficinas Culturais (Cultural Workshops of Music, Drama,
Dance, Arts and Hip Hop), Espaço Multimidia (Multimedia Space – usage
of information and communication technologies), Observatorio Social
(Social Observatory – produces, analyzes and provides data and social
indicators of the local community) and Formacao de Jovens Professores
(Young Teacher Training Program – provide college education in the
Education Graduation). In addition, there is the Centro Cultural e
Comunitario Casulo (Casulo Culture and Community Center), the building
where all Projeto Casulo’s actitivies take place and that is also the
place for the community lives through lectures, shows and workshops.
Projeto Casulo - an ICE initiative - promote autonomy and citizenship through actions in culture and education.
