PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade?

Talking about culture of peace and nonviolence with young person in a country that has serious social problems, as a result of many years of economy growth with an unfair distribution is a priority at the moment.
In the city of Aparecida (HDI = 0,804 and a percapita yearly income of a 264 dollars) there is a very height level of informal market as a consequence of a strong religious tourism economy at the weekend. Because of this there is a height level of school cut, and so is the flunk.
Youth Agent Project (Projeto Agente Jovem), a Brazilian Government Federal Project, is an important way to deal of this situation. The main object of the project is to keep young in the school and give them know-how to develop extraordinary activity at the community.
Although our project has been carry out in January 2005 others, with young person, are scheduled. We hope to spread culture of peace and nonviolence in our region.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?

The common sense that violence is part of human been existence is the most difficult social obstacle to introduce culture of peace and nonviolence knowledge. It seems to everyone that competition is inevitable and so the violence is the natural consequence.
Despite of this, what could be improved are:
• Regional coordination to supply education material;
• Some financial resources to support local activities;
• To create a data-base available to organization, in order to cross information about activities.

ACTIONS: What actions have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?

We are still at the beginning. A 16 hours course of culture of peace took place in January 2005, and others are scheduled for this year. Our target is to create a Municipal Culture of Peace Council at the end of this year. Also a peace culture and nonviolence municipal library is in construction.

ADVICE: What advice would you like to give to the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the second half of the Decade?

To promote a Global Conference with a great society mobilization to introduce peace culture and nonviolence in a international and local political agenda.

PARTNERSHIPS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

We are still building a network. Every school coordination in the city, and Non Governmental Organizations like International Rotary also will be our partners in a futures actions.

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence in the second half of the Decade (2005-2010)?
