PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
In
this matter we have mixed experience. At this moment, we have not
developed indicators; we are just trying to keep track of the
number/type of actions in our initiatives. We need to carry out
more initiative to acquire more experiences and give our stakeholders
the opportunity to meet each other, to talk, not be afraid to raise and
discuss such issues, to challenge and debate.
|
OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?
|
The main obstacles we have been facing are as follows: -> Lack of funding -> Lack of proper coordination among development organization(s), Government, Donors and targeted groups. ->
Difficulties in partnership building. As small-local organization, we
are facing lots of problem regarding this issue. Donor agencies
including UN entities are not working directly with small NGOs. Without
some exception, They are only working with big organizations. -> Corruption and Mismanagement in the selection and distribution process of service in Development sector. ->
Local understanding and Media – Community peoples have not learnt/want
to work together. The media who promote Development issues, bad news
seems to be big news and good news seems to be no news.

ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?
|
-
Bangladeshi peoples have very glorious cultural and civilization
history. Cultural and ethnical heritage of Bangladesh is still both
rich and multicolored enough. In our country, learning through cultural
and participatory way is more effective than traditional learning
system. Green Step using these tools for raising awareness on various
issues, life skill-style development and some time for program fund
raising. We have sound working experience in this sector. -Human
rights & Good governance – these two things are always widely
discussed in our country. Women, children and less-educated peoples are
suffering a lot. And the other thing, the number of court cases is
increasing significant against the lots of social and family clashes.
On that context, Green Step has established mediation system by local
committee of citizen (LCC) including local elites and lawyers for
situation analysis, mediation and legal support. With the positive
support of Green Step’s regular staff/volunteer and cultural team the
committee is supplying lots of information/message and strengthening
the people’s capacity on above issues. - While working with children
and youth, Green Step found that the children and youth group of
Bangladesh can’t share & express their views and wish to any one
around. Green Step has been establishing voluntary unit called
“Children and Youth Force (CYF)”. Numbers of young angels are involved
in this unit. One of the major goals of the program is to promote the
UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). All members and
supporters of this unit are promoting their objectives and messages to
community through cultural initiative. - Information and
Communication Technologies (ICTs) are a significant factor in the
current trend of social, cultural and economic globalization. Over last
few years, ICTs have been playing an effective role in all over
concerned world by free flow of information, knowledge sharing,
improving multi-sector transparency, empowering community and so on. To
face this situation and bringing our nation in the pipeline of
mainstream development through ICTs, Green Step has also been started
some ICT for Development themed initiative.
