PROGRESS: Has your organization seen
progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of
action and in your constituency during the first half of the Decade? |
The
ACSJC is the national social justice agency for the Catholic Church in
Australia. The main progress has been a deeper awareness in the
members and communities of our constituency of the need to develop and
maintain a culture of peace and active nonviolence.

OBSTACLES: What are the most important obstacles that have prevented progress?

ACTIONS: What actions have been
undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and
nonviolence during the first half of the Decade?

One
of the main activities of the ACSJC is the publication of the annual
Social Justice Sunday Statement and associated thematic works.
In 2004, the theme was culture of peace. Publications included: Social Justice Sunday Statement 2004: Peace be with you - Cultivating a Culture of Peace, Ten Steps Towards Cultivating a Culture of Peace, Prayer Card, 2004 Social Justice Calendar.
Summary: Peace be with you - Cultivating a Culture of Peace.
The Statement invites the reader to consider the cultivation of
peace in one's own heart, in one's family and in the community.
One starts to cultivate peace where one can. The
Statement counsels continuing development of a peaceful culture in
Australia through reconciliation with Indigenous Australians,
development of ecumenical and interfaith dialogue and prayer, and the
spread of true democratic and multicultural values. The
Scriptures and Catholic Social Teaching call on Christians to be vocal
and active in the cause of peace and human rights. The
Statement says that governments, multinational business, the rich and
powerful, need to be reminded that it is unacceptable that people
continue to be denied the right to live in dignity and peace.
The Statement concentrates on four areas: Reconciliation with
Indigenous Australians, Democracy and Multiculturalism, Poverty in
Australia and Overseas and Peace is Possible – Peace is our Duty.
