 | JADFO
has been engaged in developing alternate models of development
primarily in rural India where 77% of total country’s population live.
The present model of globalisation and liberalisation has created huge
disparities and divide between rural and urban India, resulting in
excessive poverty and desperation and ultimately leading to a belief in
violence as a way out.

 JADFO believes that the present
globalisation model of development is unsustainable and hence the
urgent need to develop a model based on agriculture priority and
revival with small scale industries in rural areas. To this end, we
have undertaken the following –

 a) Two-day Seminar on “Alternate
Development” in April 2008 wherein various models were discussed by
experts with particular emphasis on rural development and growth of
rural economy

 b) Protest and March against outsider standing for
election to represent the local population in the Rajya Sabha (Upper
House) rather than the opportunity being given to the local candidates

 c)
Creating awareness in the public particularly the civil society in
urban areas on the dangers of displacement of tribals and farmers in
villages to make way for large industrial and power projects and
organising a mass Rally and March against this forced displacement of
people

 d) Participation in anti-nuclear Rally and March in New
Delhi on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, October 2, 2009, to protest against
nuclear power plants in clear disregard of dangers inherent in the same

 e)
Two-day Convention on “Eastern Region Land Sovereignty” on 7th &
8th May, 2010 wherein over 150 delegates from the States of Orissa,
Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand deliberated on the
rights of tribals and farmers to their land and the primacy of Gram
Sabhas over same, declaring that the State has no right to that land
unless the consent of the Gram Sabha is willingly and clearly obtained.
Land for food ids the first priority and not for large industries and
mega power projects.

| PROGRESS: Has your organization
seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain
of action and in your constituency during the second half of the
Decade?
 | Rather
than peace, violence has erupted due to continued years of neglect and
the forced implementation of wrong globalisation development models.
 |
| OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?
 | None
so far but we fear that the State will use its power to oppose our
rural development model based on no land being given for large
industries and mega power plants.
 |
| PLANS: What new engagements are
planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to
promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?
 | Implementation
of our alternate development model based on increasing productivity of
agriculture with organic farming and installation of small scale
industries in rural areas to stop rural to urban migration.
 |
| GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??
