PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS: What partnerships and networks does your organization participate in, thus strengthening the global movement for a culture of peace?

One of the key elements that STEP is working on is promoting collaborations and synergies and has with in 8 months of its existence already collaborated with over 14 institutions and over 12 NGOs to bring together New Delhi's First Peace Festival. From Schools, Colleges, Resident Welfare Associations to Women Rights NGOs, Child Right and Minority right NGO to people from the Anti Nuclear Movement and Ecology Movement all participated in this 2 week festival in the city. It is our hope that in the future there will be other who will join us from various parts of the country and the world.

ACTIONS: What activities have been undertaken by your organization to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence during the ten years of the Decade? If you already made a report in 2005, your information from 2005 will be included in the 2010 report.

STEP is an initiative dedicated to building a just and peaceful society that is free, non-violent and sustainable. Established in February 2009 with the backing of Foundation for Universal Responsibility of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, it was finally registered as a trust in June 2009. The purpose for establishing STEP was to help create communities which are engaged in learning conversations on a regular basis. Such processes can help dismantle their prejudices and biases and enable moves towards acceptance and compassion, before mistrust and fear take root to become violent forces of interaction both with self and others. Using New Delhi as its learning ground it is our hope that we can create relationships which are honest to themselves and each other so that they may explore areas of ‘peacelesness’ in their collective lives and learn to deal with conflict imaginatively.
“Jashn-e-Aman – The Festival of Peace” was STEP’s flagship initiative in collaboration with 8 partner organizations and took place in New Delhi from the 19th of September to the 2nd October, 2009. This festival was a pilot as well as a launch pad for undertaking various urban grass root activities. The activities targeted schools, colleges and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) across the city. Many dialogue groups where set up during this festival and explored topics like youth engagement for building a culture of peace to inter-cultural solidarity, ecological living, understanding gender and creating gender sensitive campuses etc. In the last 3 months all our partners have requested more such dialogues.
At STEP we want to make change accessible. We wish to provide an open source platform where the various enablers of change share their experiences with each other and with the world at large, facilitating greater collaboration and co-operation between organizations and individuals with shared goals.
To achieve this we seek to create an online social network with a thrust on active citizenship reporting to begin with in Delhi (India). If this module works other cities will also be targeted. This online initiative will have the following components-
Enabling individual action through self auditing tools and resources for action.
Publish profiles online and provide an e-network of individuals, groups and organizations interested in promoting and enabling a culture of peace.
Provide online services for posting development job vacancies and volunteering opportunities. Publicize events and activities as well as information about services and products offered by partner organizations (e-commerce).
Develop an online resource base which would include articles, work-plans, exercises, diagnostics, and other tools. Users would be able to post on this database and access resources posted by users on the platform. The database will be free of cost.
Organize events online and in conjunction with educational institutions, local welfare associations, and partner organizations in order to stimulate dialogue, discussion, and action.
Thus we wish to keep the talk and praxis in sync with each other and available to as many people as possible.
Dealing with conflicts imaginatively so that violence does not become the preferred tool of resolution is out hope for our city to begin with and the nation and globe to follow.

PROGRESS: Has your organization seen progress toward a culture of peace and nonviolence in your domain of action and in your constituency during the second half of the Decade?

We are very young organisation but the way people and groups have come forward to support us makes us believe that our mandate is one alot of people believe in and want to work towards.

OBSTACLES: Has your organization faced any obstacles to implementing the culture of peace and nonviolence? If so, what were they?

We faced the following challenges in our short duration of operations:-

1) Funding opportunities are limited as culture of peace can mean everything and nothing in particular.
2) People find it hard to relate the concept and need to explained in great detail to understand the meaning and scope of culture of peace.
3) Schools and Colleges do not have peace clubs and the vocabulary of the culture of peace sounds to nebulous to them

PLANS: What new engagements are planned by your organization in the short, medium and long term to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence?

hort Term Plan: Follow up on the learning of Jashn-e-Aman the Festival of Peace.

Medium:- Institutionalize the Festival of Peace as an annual event in the city. Create dialogue groups in schools, colleges and RWA to explore conflict and look for peaceful solutions to them.

Long term:- Make the city a peace zone and create replicable model for other cities in the country to learn from.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT: How do you think the culture of peace and nonviolence could be strengthened and supported at the world level??

The Culture of Peace could be strengthen by:-

1) Popularizing its vocabulary in all aspects of human interaction from politics, to education, recreation and cultural expression.
2) Creating deeper synergies amongst movements fighting structural violence and providing spaces for them to share their experience and learn from each other.
3) Making funding available to interdisciplinary projects.
4) Having a greater political presence of the peace perspective.
5) Making training and education related to peace more easily available.
